Section 2AA


Holy Family cruised past Prior Lake Saturday

Holy Family Catholic 5, Prior Lake 2

Holy Family got a goal and two assists from John Simon and Garrett Pinoniemi to pace the Fire to an easy 5-2 win over Prior Lake.  After surrendering a five-on-three power play goal to the Lakers to make it 3-1 in the second period, Simon muscled home his goal to take the wind out of any Laker comeback. 

The two teams traded goals in the third period, a back-and-forth stanza with several chances for both teams.  Senior Ryan Miller faced 42 shots for Prior Lake in the loss. Holy Family will return to the section final Wednesday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

(1) Minnetonka vs. (5) Chaska

Bobby Brink scored late in the second period and again late in the third to secure a 4-1 win for top-seeded Minnetonka, who will face Holy Family Catholic in the section final. 

Luke Loheit and Matt Koethe also scored for the Skippers, while Ethan Benz notched the lone goal of the game for the No. 5 seed Hawks. Chaska goaltender Justin Bach stood on his head throughout the game, finishing the loss with 32 saves.

Section 3AA


Chase Foley (17) scores for St. Thomas Academy in Saturday's win.

St. Thomas Academy 9, Burnsville 2

St. Thomas Academy racked up six goals in the first period en route to a 9-2 win over No. 4 seed Burnsville. Ryan O'Neill led the No. 1 seed Cadets with three goals, followed by Payton Matsui's two scores. Chase Foley, Blake Holmes, Nico Vega, and Rob Christy all scored once in the win for the Cadets. Tim Urlaub and Logan Kittleson scored once each for the Blaze. 

Eastview 4, Rosemount 0

Nate Bordson scored twice, while Zach Anderson and Chris Fan scored once each to lift Eastview to a 4-0 win over South Suburban Conference rival Rosemount in the second Section 3AA semifinal of Saturday. 

Eastview goaltender Ben Beattie finished the shutout with 30 saves, while his Rosemount counterpart and Senior Goalie of the Year finalist Ben Garrity stopped 31 shots in the loss.

Eastview's reward for the win over Rosemount is a date with No. 1 seed St. Thomas Academy, to be played on Thursday, March 1st at Braemar Ice Arena in Edina.  


Nate Bordson scored two goals to lead Eastview to a 4-0 win over Rosemount on Saturday.

SECTION 4AA QUARTERFINALS


Hill-Murray hung on for a 4-2 win over Irondale in Saturday's 4AA quarterfinals.

White Bear Lake 4, Roseville 2

Top-seeded White Bear Lake scored four unanswered goals after going down 2-0 to escape the first round of the Section 4AA playoffs with a 4-2 win over No. 8 seed Roseville. 

The Raiders opened the game with goals from Carver Martin and Reginald Morrow, but the Bears erased the 2-0 deficit with a pair of goals by Billy Rose and Cooper Anderson to close out the first period. Spencer Millard scored the eventual game-winner in the second period for the Bears, and Max Jennrich added an insurance goal on an empty Roseville net to ice the win. Roseville goaltender Kyle Roy finished the game with 31 saves.  

Hill-Murray 4, Irondale 2

Hill-Murray scored three of the game's final four goals to edge upset-minded Irondale 4-2 on Saturday at Aldrich Arena. Mike Fleischhacker of the Pioneers and Tyler Eskro of the Knights traded goals in the first period before Vincent Hurley and Lucas Wahlin notched goals in the second to stretch the Hill-Murray lead to 3-1.

Griffin Bourassa pulled the seventh-seeded Knights within one with a goal late in the second frame, but Nick Pierre answered to ice the win for the No. 2 seed Pioneers.  

Stillwater 6, North St. Paul 0

Andrew Eichten scored two goals to lead Stillwater to a rollicking 6-0 win over North St. Paul. Adam Eisele, Joseph Stengl, Ty Thureson, and Parker Wylie all added a single goal for the No. 3 seed Ponies, while goaltender Jesse Brown turned away all 12 shots he faced to earn the shutout. 

Tartan 2, Mounds View 1 (3OT)

Justin Thompson scored early in the third overtime to send Tartan to the Section 4AA semifinals with a thrilling win over Mounds View. Brandon Blank scored the first goal of the game for the No. 4 seed Titans, and Vann Hartigan evened the score at 1-1 for the fifth-seeded Mustangs in the second frame.

Section 5AA


A three-goal third period enabled Centennial to ease past Anoka 4-0 on Saturday.

Centennial 4, Anoka 0

Nursing a 1-0 lead over Anoka entering the third period of Saturday's Section 5AA semifinals, No. 1 seed Centennial exploded for three goals in the third to cruise to a 4-0 win over the fifth-seeded Tornadoes. Lucas McGregor finished with a goal and two assists for the Cougars, while Hayden Brickner, Wyatt Schoephoerster, and Joshua Hermes all chipped in single goals. Anoka goaltender Joey Miller made 31 saves in the loss. 

 Maple Grove 3, Blaine 2

A scoreless third period enabled No. 2 seed Maple Grove to slip past third-seeded Blaine 3-2 and advance to the Section 5AA finals against Northwest Suburban Conference rival Centennial. Matt Jaglo scored twice for the Crimson with Tyler Kostelecky adding a single goal. Cam Shoberg and Carson Richels scored once each in the loss for the Bengals. 


Maple Grove will meet Centennial is the Section 5AA finals.

Section 6AA


Griffin Ness scores Wayzata's third goal of Saturday's win over Cretin-Derham Hall.

 Wayzata 3, Cretin-Derham Hall 2

No. 3 seed Wayzata survived a late barrage in the third period to emerge with a 3-2 win over No. 2 seed Cretin-Derham Hall, thanks in large part to 23 saves by Trevor Wong. 

Alex Sahli and Tristan Nelko each scored once in the first period for the Trojans, with a goal by Cretin-Derham Hall's Matt Gleason sandwiched between them. Griffin Ness scored in the second to make the score 3-1 Wayzata, and the Raiders' Danny Magnuson made the score 3-2 early in the third before the Trojans shut down the CDH threat. 

Edina 6, St. Louis Park 1

Mr. Hockey finalist Sammy Walker totaled three goals and four points as Edina clipped St. Louis Park 6-1 to earn a spot in the Section 6AA championship game. Demetrios Koumontzis, Lewis Crosby, and Cole Cavanagh each scored once in the win for the Hornets, while Luke Mobley scored the only goal of the game for the Orioles during the second period.  


Edina moves on to face Wayzata in rematch of last year's Section 6AA finals. The Trojans ended the Edina season 3-1.

Section 8AA

Moorhead 5, St. Cloud 0

Moorhead makes its 18th consecutive trip to the Section 8AA finals with a 5-0 win over St. Cloud. The Spuds scored twice in the second period and three more times in the third to secure the victory, with Jack Stetz scoring twice and Luke Gramer, Ryan Stafford, and Cole O'Connell all tallying one goal. Lance Leonard made 20 saves to earn the shutout. 

St. Michael-Albertville 4, Brainerd 2

St. Michael-Albertville advanced to its first section final with a 4-2 win over Brainerd, and will face defending state runner-up Moorhead. 


The Spuds are heading to their 25th consecutive section final
