Sibley celebrates taking Third at State

Osseo/Maple Grove lost a strange game to Edina in Saturday's semifinals.  It was strange because halfway through game the Crimson had outshot the Hornets 14-10 and trailed 6-1.  They rallied in the second half of the game but lost 6-3.  Sibley couldn't find the net against Rochester Red, hitting three pipers.  Now, both teams playing their last game of the season, had something to prove before moving on to spring and summer sports.

The game started slow.  For the opening mnutes the two teams poked at each other.  It took an Osseo/Maple Grove goal four minutes into the period to set the fireworks off.  The Crimson's Trevor Janicke put a backhander in the net to put OMG up 1-0.  Spencer Dahlquist got the assist.  A minute later, Sibley came back to tie the game 1-1.

A minute later, the fireworks continues.  This time, OMG's Miles Ezell scored with Connor Kelley getting the assist to put Crimson ahead again 2-1.  That lead lasted 15 seconds.  The Warriors Luke Herzog scored to tie the game 2-2.  The two teams battled evenly for the rest of the period.  The first ended in a 2-2 tie.

Sibley's Brandon McFadden scores the game winner in the Warriors third place 6-3 win over OMG.

The second period cruised along with OMG trying to establish puck control in Sibley's zone and the Warriors looking for that breakaway.  Both had their opportunities.  OMG had opportunities to score low and Sibley had their breakaways.  Neither team could put the puck in the net. At the six minute mark of the second period OMG drew a penalty and killed the penalty only to draw a second penalty at the four minute mark.

Late in OMG's penalty kill, the Crimson mounted a rush on the Sibley net.  A defense dropped on the loose puck in the crease and was immediately called for a penalty shot.  OMG's Trevor Janicke took the penalty shot.  Janicke came straight down the slot, broke left and top shelft the puck to score and break the 2-2 tie.  OMG lead 3-2.

The Crimson went on to kill the penalty.  Neither team could score in the remaining two minutes.  The period ended with OMG up 3-2 and outshooting Sibley 18-10.

OMG's Trevor Janicke scores this penalty shot to put the Crimson up 3-2 at the end of the second period.

The third period was all Sibley.  They opened on the attack and kept the pressure on OMG throughout the period.  At the ten minute mark, Sibley trapped the puck in low in the Crimson's zone and moved the puck high for a shot from the left blue line area.  The puck bounced at the top of the crease and ended up slipping in the low right side to tie the game 3-3.

That goal picked the game pace up.  When Sibley drew a penalty, OMG had their chance.  They set up in the Warriors' zone, but the defense was playing loose with the puck.  Sibley had Brandon McFadden on the top of the box looking for a miscue.  He got it and soloed in on OMG's goalie getting him down and slidding the puck left into the net for the shorthanded game winner.

OMG was still on the power play, but not started to play cautious.  Sibley killed the penalty and started to push the breakaway.  At the five minute mark, Luke Williams succeeded beating the goalie high left.  Suddenly, Sibley led 5-3.

The breakaways didn't stop.  A minute later, McFadden intercepted a Crimson pass at the OMG blue line, broke down the defense and soloed in on the goalie to score again and end the scoring 6-3.  Sibley takes third place in the State Peewee AA tourney.
