Tier 1 Hockey Update

YHH has learned that the owners of Northern Educate are working in concert with the North St. Paul school system and the North St. Paul Hockey Association to help facilitate a way for their students to play as a team or participate within their association. In a letter to it's students and parents by a limited liability corporation as Ability, Academic and Athletic, stated their goals and objectives for this coming season.

Because there was nothing firm for the school - approval from North St. Paul School district has yet to approve the use of one of their facilities - or from Minnesota Hockey..much of the plans for next season are still very much in limbo.

That being said, the officials from Northern Educate seem to be taking the proper channels to assemble themselves within the confines of MN Hockey and USA Hockey, however possible.

On Monday, June 9 USA Hockey will vote on a 3 year moratorium of adding any Tier 1 Hockey. Our sources say this provision will not pass, thus opening up an opportunity for local organizations to play Tier 1 Hockey. Northern Educate along with Northern Wings (Duluth) and the MN Blades have applied for Tier 1 sanctioning.

What will Happen?

The 3 year moratorium will not pass. Minnesota Hockey will approve the three organizations to play Tier 1 hockey for this year. The two schools (Wings and Northern Educate) will only be allowed sanctioning at the 16 and 18 level access. The Blades will play a before (Fall) and after (Spring) schedule similar to Team WI at the U16 and U18 level.

Youth Levels - Squirt (04 and younger), PeeWee (02 and younger) and Bantam (00 and younger) - will likely not be affected by this 1 year ruling. MN Hockey will conduct busines as usual at these levels.

In the mean time, between June 9 and 2015, MN Hockey will likely put rules in place for a Tier 1 system for the following season. What they decide in the coming months will have a huge impact on many institutions. Here are few:

  • Shattuck St. Mary's - the only Tier 1 program in Minnesota has never had to qualify for Nationals...they will now have to compete with these programs on the ice and potentially on the recruiting trail.
  • Upper Midwest Elite League - With 3 "elite" organizations offering Fall (and Spring) hockey at the 16/18 level, will this hurt the long term viability of their league?
  • MSHL State Tournament - the biggest institution of them all in Minnesota, Tier 1 hockey lies in direct competition. That coupled with 41 players leaving HS hockey last season for Junior A hockey - the jewel of Minnesota hockey could lose it's shine.

Commentary

Community based hockey combined with civic/association run arenas is the most effective way to make the game of hockey affordable to as many people as possible in Minnesota. Tier 1 Hockey at the highest level will always turn out high-end Division 1 and NHL talent, but the cost to those players is so high it makes hockey a sport not affordable to the middle class. MN Hockey's approach (local rinks, volunteer coaches, high school hockey) is high-end hockey and is very cost effective to kids all over Minnesota.
