Ty Nelson leads Pro to 2-1 win over 3 time Defending Champ Bulldogs

Leave it to the Pros, Toronto takes home the Brick.

Imagine growing up in the same neighborhood as a Yankees fan. Yankees this, Yankees that. After a while you get really sick of the Yankees.

In Toronto, The Toronto Bulldogs have become the Yankees of Summer Squirt/Atom hockey. The last three Summers, the Bulldogs have won the Brick. Toronto Pro Hockey has done well, but has been a bridesmaid more than a bride.

No better script could have been written for this year's Toronto Pro team. They won their Division going 4-0-2, losing twice in Overtime. They won two clutch games on Friday (Chicago and CT) and then turned around and Junior Bruins Saturday to gain the finals. And guess who was their to greet them? Yes, you guessed it, the hated Toronto Bulldogs. Okay, we don't know for sure if their is actual hate. In fact, it seemed like many of the players knew each other and the atmosphere was somewhat friendly prior to face off.

But once the puck dropped, it was on like Donkey Kong.

In the first period, Mick Thompson the scoring started for Pro Hockey on a pass from Matthew Jovanovic. At the end of the first period Bulldogs Forward Kocha Delic ran into Toronto Goalie Dominic Divincentis and was called for a five minute major and ten minute misconduct. This coupled with a minor by Isaiah George early in the second put Toronto Pro on the PP for a long time. The three time defending champs battled and were able to kill off both pealties. Later in the second, a period that the Bulldogs seemed to carry finally got on the board when Charlie Gollob made a great move to the net and Divincentis made a great save, but Rutger Mcgroarty picked up the loose puck and wrapped it around the back of the net for the equalizer. The score was tied 1-1 after two periods.

The third period was dead even, both teams had their chances and for much of the first half of the period, you got the sense that this game was headed to overtime. Neither team seemed to be getting many great chances. Until one series about six minutes into the third...Jovanovic and Thompson won a few puck battles to frustrate the Dawgs. On one such battle the puck squirted out to the point and Defenseman Ty Nelson walked it in a couple steps and beat Toronto Goalie Rowan Kimens with a high wrist shot to give the Pros a 2-1 lead.

Late in the game down by a goal was familiar territory for the Bulldogs, they had been there twice already and come back and won in the Tournament (Boston with :18 left and Montreal with 2:00 left). This writer could only assume it would happen again. But it didn't, the Yankees...oops....I mean the Bulldogs could not pull out any late game heroics and Toronto Pro Hockey won 2-1. The fifth straight year a Toronto team has won the Brick.

Tourney MVP

Brick MVP Ty Nelson, Toronto Pro Hockey

We announced that Ty Nelson was our MVP yesterday via Twitter. It was an easy decision. Nelson logged important minutes the entire tournament and was outstanding both on the forecheck, which often goes unnoticed. In addition to tough in the offensive zone (see GWG in title game), he was also a calming force in the Defensive zone, either in front of his net or leading the Pros out of their zone. Congrats to Ty and the rest of his teammates on a great tourney win.

First team All Tourney Chris Delaney, Boston Jr. Bruins

All Tourney Team

First team All Tourney Tristan Lunau, Montreal Ice Storm

First Team

(F) Charlie Gollob, TOR Bulldogs...was amazing all week, major contributor including 2 GWG and leading scorer in Pool Play.

(F) Chris Delaney, BOS Jr. Bruins...was the type of player who seemed to shine on every shift...had 1 GWG for Bruins.

(F) Shane Wright TOR Por Hockey...strong forward who played huge role in their quest for the title.

(D) Ty Nelson, TOR Pro Hockey...was catalyst from the blueline for the pros, had GWG in championship game versus Bulldogs.

(D) Tristan Lunau, MON Ice Storm...Big kid with a ton of skill. He was more than just a big kid with a big shot. Lunau's presence was felt every time he was on the ice.

(G) Nick Jones, ALB...besides gaudy numbers (< 1.00 GAA, .949 Save %, and 196 minutes logged), he made big saves at big moments for Team Brick.

Second Team

(F) Rutger Mcgroarty, TOR Bulldogs...had 12 points, a GWG, and was a thorn in the side of every team in the tourney. An offensive force every time he had a chance.

(F) Liam Watkins, ALB...Had six goals in pool play, was a whiz around the net and seemed to always be in the right place at the right time for Team Brick.

(F) Jake Rozzi, MON...Montreal had a great run in the Brick this year and Rozzi was a big reason for their success. Fleet of foot and a great shooter, Rozzi always seemed have his nose where the action was.

(D) Brady Berard, BOS Jr. Bruins...Berard had 2 GWG and was always a threat to score from anywhere for the Bruins.

(D) Lane Hutson, DET RedWings...Hutson was hurt late in the tournament, but not before YHH took notice. Score a huge GWG in OT was only the beginning of the things Hutson did prior to injury.

(G) Katie Desa, CT Junior Yankees...Desa was one of the biggest standouts in the entire tourney. Very athletic, made incredible saves in crucial moments for the Yankees. Almost single handidly beat TOR Pro in what amounted to a play in game on Friday for the Yankees.

Epilogue

We discovered the picture below via Social Media. It is a picture of the All Tournament team as selected by the The Brick and their committee. Assuming that Charlie Gollob is the Toronto Bulldog in this picture, our All Tourney Team and theirs were identical.
