High school hockey returns to Eagan this weekend for the 16th annual Summer Festival Tourney. This tourney has 16 teams entered; no teams are split. Each game consists of two 25 minute periods. Each team can skate 17 players. Lakeville North returns to this tourney after winning the Eagan Meltdown on the same ice last Sunday. The Panthers are the favorites to win again but will face tough competition from South Suburban (Prior Lake, Farmington, Eastview), tough competition from the northern suburbs (Duluth East and Stillwater both Class AA state tourney teams last March), and two strong teams out of the Northwest Suburban (Elk River and Blaine).
Friday Games To Watch:
The 6:00 PM game between Farmington and Eastview is a repeat of last weekend's semifinal game where the Tigers took a 4-1 lead into the third period and held on to win 5-4. Farmington's offensive power overwhelmed the Lightning defense in the first half of that game. Eastview found their offense late in the game. It will be interesting to see if the two teams have adjusted their play.
The second game played at 6:15 PM between Duluth East and Delano should match two teams that will feature some strong offensive players in the Hounds' Ash Altmann and Delano's Ben Meyers. Delano will test Duluth East's strength in the coming season. Though the Hounds made it to the state last season, their struggled through the last few weeks of regular season.
Saturday's Games to Watch:
In the 10:15 AM game, Farmington and Duluth East tangle. This game will be a test of strength between Northern Minnesota hockey and Southern Minnesota hockey. If Farmington matches their performance from last week, Southern Minnesota Hockey prevails.
At 2:45 PM, SPA and Rosemount will play each other in a game where younger talent will have opportunities to show what they can do. The SPA "ponies" led by ninth grader to be Devin Mccabe will tangle with a senior line led by Lukas Gillett letting Charlie Monn have his chances.
Elk River and Holy Family play the 7:00 PM game. This a game between two talented teams, all a fan needs to do is settle in and watch. Should be the best game Saturday.

In the 2012 East Regional, the Stillwater Peewee A team beat Wayzata 3-1 in this game, but could not get by Osseo/Maple Grove. This year the 2011-2012 peewees will have an impact on the high school team.
