Griffin Streeter leads Boys Mavs to 2-0 start

Friday Recaps (Boys)

Edina's Emmett Wurst scores for the Mavericks on Friday.

Game 1...Mavs sneak past Huskies in a Shootout

The first game of the PeeWee Challenge was kicked off on Rink 1 of Bloomington Ice Garden. The Huskies, led by coaches Karl Dexheimer and Bill Thoreson took on the Mavericks coached by high school buddies Troy Campbell and Scott Bell. A great back and forth game and as expected very low scoring with both coaches with a history of strong defenders.

The Mavs got on the board first when Luc Laylin fed Griffin Streeter for a pretty one-time goal in the first. The Huskies Noah Tussey would get the equalizer on a feed from Wyatt Kaiser to tie the score early in the second half. After a crazy overtime the game was decided in a shootout. Griffin Streeter and Joe Miller scored for the Mavericks and Ramsey Bell made two saves to preserve the win for the Purple and White.

Game 2...Bulldogs beat Irish in Shootout

St. Paul's Matthew Gleason had a game to remember scoring four goals in the second half, including the tying goal with a minute left. Blake Messenburg scored two shorthanded goals in the first half for the Irish pacing them to a 2-0 lead at the half. After Gleason scored two to tie it, CJ Zins gave the Irish the lead 3-2. A few minutes later Gleason would tie the game on a pass from Mason Streeter. Late in the game, the Irish after some nice pressure got a goal from Brett Oberle on an assist from Zins. In the shootout Ethan Cumming flashed his great hands as he put away the Game Winner for the Bulldogs.

Game 3...Mavericks win two in one night beating Gophers 6-3

The Gophers got on the board first when Owen Neuharth put one past Prior Lake teammate Carson Stokes for an early 1-0 lead. Joe Miller would tie it a minute later on the Power Play on a pass from Griffin Streeter. Thirteen seconds later, Bobby Brink gave the Gophers the lead 2-1. But the Mavericks showed no quit, playing on only an hour's rest Grant Ahcan tapped in a loose puck to tie it at two in a high scoring first half. Mark Overman sliced through the Gopher defense and gave the lead for good 3-2. The game's number 1 star, Griffin Streeter got a loose puck in front and buried it top shelf to give the Mavericks a comfortable 4-2 lead at the half. The Mavs would add two more goals in the second half (Wurst and Streeter) to extend their lead to 6-2. Griffin Streeter would end the game with two goals and two assists to earn the Lotzza Motzza Player of the Game.

Friday Recaps (Girls)

The Gophers Josie Bothun was the Lotzza Motzza POTG on Friday

Game 1...Mavs win a Shootout nailbiter over Huskies

The Mavericks got off to an early 3-0 lead over the Huskies and appeared to be in complete control of the game. Goals by Kensie Malone, Jordann Swingle, and Sydney Paulsen. Late in the first, the Huskies got a goal by Mackenzie Husaby to make it interesting. The second half was all Huskies for a while as they began to chip away on the Maverick lead. Early in the half, Mannon Mcmahon fired a rocket past the Maverick goal bar down to cut the Maverick lead to 3-2. Later in the half, it was Mcmahon again, this time shorthanded to tie the score at 3. Now the momentum was all Huskies. With less than two minutes to go Mackenzie Husaby would get her second goal on the Power Play to give the Huskies the lead 4-3. With time winding down and the Mavericks about to pull their Goalie, Kensie Malone would get a loose puck on the Husky blue line and exploded toward the net for a pretty breakaway goal to tie it with 1:21 to go. After an exciting overtime with several penalties ignored by the officials and near misses both ways the game went to a shootout. On the fifth shooter with the game on the line, Margaret Nicholson would beat the Husky goalie for the Maverick win.

Game 2...Gophers pull it out in the end to beat Bulldogs 2-1

The second game of the night was fast paced but was controlled by the defense....and the goalies. Despite being down 1-0 (stuff-in goal by Emily Roder), the Bulldogs had some great chances. They did not have an answer for Josephine Bothun of the Gophers. She made big save after big save preserving the Gopher lead the entire half.

The Bulldogs Lauren Heinsch scored on a pretty wrist shot past Makrista Cameron to even the score 1-1 in the middle of the second half. The game was back and forth until the end. Stillwater's Lauren Einan got a loose puck in front of the Bulldog's net and fired a shot that hit traffic twice and bounced high and eventually past Anna LaRose for the Game Winning Goal.

Friday's Stars

Griffin Streeter with one of his three goals Friday.

Josephine Bothun...made some clutch saves in the first half for the Gophers in their 2-1 win.

Sophia Doll...did not register a point, but was a catalyst on Defense for the Mavs.

Matthew Gleason...4 goals in one game against the best PeeWees in Minnesota, no more needs to be said.

Griffin Streeter...had 3 goals, 2 assists and added a goal in the Mavs 2-1 Shootout win on Friday.

Kensie Malone...had 2 goals, an assist, and a Shootout goal for the Mavs.

Mannon McMahon...had 2 goals and was a threat every time she touched the puck.

Loch Ness Monsters

Here are a few kids that we have often heard about but never seen.

Addison Hackley, Wayzata - great skill, seemed to get when she had the puck on her stick. Made great plays on both ends of the rink.

Josie Kramer, Brainerd - great first step...seems to be in the middle of the action on every shift.

Ryan Mulrenin, Wayzata - some say the ice is slippery, try getting your mitts on Mulrenin...very elusive, great hands.

Margaret Nicholson, Minnetonka - big defenseman that controlled the play and displayed great patience with the puck.

Brett Oberle, Woodbury - handles the puck well both passing and shooting...will likely find the scoresheet a lot in his career.

Ben Troumbley, Coleraine - great hands, possesses great quickness...fun to watch in the offensive zone.
