2014 PeeWee Challenge Champions - Mavericks

Mavs avenge loss Saturday beat Gophers in last Minute

After losing a tough game to the Gophers on Saturday, the Mavericks came back Sunday and won in what was one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Both teams loaded with star studded rosters went all out for all 42 minutes of hockey.

The Gophers got on the board first when CeCe Ziegler made another highlight reel play weaving between two Maverick defenders and finishing with a 5 hole shot. Late in the first half is when the fireworks went crazy at Bloomington Ice Garden. Four goals in four minutes. Three by the Mavericks. First, Margaret Nicholson scored on a shot from the point that wowed the crowd. And then thirty seconds later, Laura Einen tipped in an Emily Reed shot from the point for the Gophers  to give them the lead, 2-1. Shakopee's Catilyn Rock shoveled in a loose puck in front of the Gopher net to tie the score for the Mavericks. And then thirty seconds later, the Mavericks Lily Delianedis stole the puck from Ziegler in the corner and walked out and shelfed a wrist shot to give the Mavericks a 3-2 lead at the half.

The second half was just as exciting as the first, but less scoring. Down 3-2 late in the game, the Gophers began to pressure the Mavericks. Courtney Peterson had a great save on the blueline that kept the play alive in the Mavs zone. Eventually Jenna Hartung got the loose puck and found a charging CeCe Ziegler open in front of the net who pumped in her second tally of the game to tie it at 3-3. Both teams battled hard the final three minutes. With just over a minute to play, Sophia Doll got loose for the Mavericks and fired a laser high short side that hit the back of crossbar and into the net to give the Mavericks the win 4-3.
