Top PeeWee and Squirt teams clash at Braemar Thursday night

Edina vs. Edina, it's a family tradition

Edina hockey is steep in tradition, winning several state youth and high school hockey championships. They have had some great players dating all the way back to the legendary Bobby Krieger. But one of the great traditions that has developed over the years is in-level battles for local bragging rights. You can cut the tension in the rink with a knife. Lots of "good lucks" before the game followed by a lot of "as long as our team wins" under their breath.

YHH took in two games Thursday night between the two Squirt A teams at 7:00 followed by the PeeWee B's at 8:10. The East Rink at Braemar was originally built for figure skating, on Thursday there was some serious skating on display, but no fancy outfits.

Game 1: Edina White Outlasts #4 Edina Green

Brennan Wurst knocks in a rebound goal for Edina Green Thursday night.

Coming into the game Thursday between White and Green, Edina Green seemed to be the stronger of the two teams. Green was 6-0-1 and ranked #4 in the NOW Rankings and #6 in the Staff Rankings. Edina White was 3-6-0 and not ranked in the Top 10 of either poll. The roster for the Green team has a nice crop of talent up front and the White team is built around it's defense.

Early in the game, White was the aggressor. They took the play to Green with a fierce forecheck that seemed to give Green trouble. White got on the board in the middle of the first when Austin Williams pumped in a Riley Spindler rebound to give White the lead 1-0. In the middle of the second, Spindler would get the eventual game winner when he charged the net and got a loose rebound past a sprawling Bryce Hess.

With a two goal lead, the White team kept the pressure on, but used their strong defensive corps lead by Henry Whittlef and Charlie Sandven to lock down the Green's high powered offense. Late in the third, Green made things interesting when Nick Mikan got loose and used his speed and hands to get free. He fired a low shot that Goalie Jack Thomson got a pad on, but Brennan Wurst was camped in front all alone and the left hander hammered it home to cut the White lead to 2-1. The Greens would pull Hess with a minute and change to go but were unable to sustain serious pressure and get the equalizer.

Stars of the Game:

White

Henry Whittlef, a remarkable puck carrier who really plays the game with savvy
Austin Williams, great skater who knew when to press the play
Riley Spindler, had a Goal and an Assist

Green

Bryce Hess, robbed the White team of a few great chances, kept his team in the game until the end.

Wyatt Wurst, strong forward who is hard to bump off the puck.

Game 2: Green and White skate to 2-2 Tie

Anderson Blum rifles a shot top shelf for Edina Green Thursday night.

The nightcap featured the two top teams in PeeWee B. Green came into the game 16-1-0 ranked #1 in both the NOW and Staff Rankings. White arrived at Braemar with a 23-1-0 record and two Championship trophies already in their trophy case. The skill on both teams was evident on the first few shifts of the game. These two teams appear more like PeeWee "A" teams. Each with a few players with great speed and skill.

Edina Green came out the aggressor, getting several great scoring chances on White goalie Frank Fabbro. Anderson Blum had a few early chances, on one said chance he got loose in the White slot and flushed a rocket past Fabbro to give Green the early lead. Later in the second period with Green still pouring on the chances, Gordy Johnson got a loose puck in the slot and fired a high wrister that whizzed past Fabbro's head into the net. At this point in the game it was all Green.

Within minutes of the Johnson goal, something occurred that this corner of YHH had never seen in nearly 40 years of Youth Hockey. An Edina White Parent who was volunteering in the Penalty Box was ejected from the box. Presumably for arguing with the referee. These next few words are uncomfortable to type. The parent ejection woke up the White team and changed the momentum of the game.

The White team did not score in the second period, but they began to apply more pressure and they developed a sustained attack on the Green team.

In the third, the White's Cole Nasby scored on a tip in with ten minutes left in the game to pour gas on the White flame. The MN Hot 10 White team started to feel it. Putting constant pressure on Louie Deckas, but Deckas was able to hold down the fort for the Green. Four minutes later, Nasby would tie the score on a rebound. The Right Wing would use his strength to create space and bury the game tying goal.

The tension and excitement for the last five minutes was outstanding. Both teams left it all on the ice. Bodies were flying and sticks were swinging in desperation for the game winning goal. Both teams would amass 4 penalties including three on the Green team. This would create a 5 on 3 stint for the White team, but they could not get the winner. At the conclusion of the 5 on 3, Johnny Buenz would get a huge chance for the Green while coming out of the penalty box, but Fabbro would come up big. Both teams deserved to win and neither deserved to lose. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Stars of the Game:

Green

Anderson Blum, this kid is a beast of a player. Great individual skill and a wicked shot. YHH can see why the Green team has scored so many goals.

Johnny Buenz, great hands and Bobby Krieger speed. Won a lot of one on one battles.

White

Cole Nasby, the kid worked his tail off all night trying to help his team win. Finished the game with both goals for the White.

Frank Fabbro, made a lot of fantastic saves early to keep the Green team from running away with the game in the first two periods.
