Grand Rapids Mitchell Howsen fires a shot on Huck Heggerston Friday in Hallock.
Friday night, Grand Rapids Squirt A made the trip down to Crosby to take on the Northern Lakes Lightning at John Spalj Arena. This was definitely a David versus Goliath matchup with the visiting Thunderhawks playing the role of Goliath and the Lightning assuming the role of David. Grand Rapids seamed comfortable playing the part of Goliath in this matchup from the drop of the puck. Grand Rapids started applying pressure from the get go however the Lightning defense weathered the early storm and gave the impression that maybe they would be able to provide an upset. Lucas Delong and the rest of the Thunderhawks had no intention of letting the Lightning keep the Thunderhawks off the scoreboard as he found the back of the net off a pass from Lucky Bischoff to get Grand Rapids rolling. Grand Rapids kept the Lightning bottled up for much of the first period and additional goals by Mitchell Howsen and Justin Kerr allowed the Thunderhawks to end the first period with a 3-0 advantage.
Grand Rapids started the second period fast and behind an early goal from Travis Verbeck assisted from Justin Kerr giving them a four goal lead. The Lightning had no intention of giving in and continued to skate hard and play solid defense keeping Grand Rapids off the board for much of the period. Grand Rapids continued it's offensive pressure and Joey Delgreco put the puck in the back of the net with 3:57 remaining in the period. Moments later Lucky Bischoff found the net and Garrett Drotts did the same put Grand Rapids up 7-0 and removed any thoughts of a Lightning rally.
Samuel Sterle and Joseph Herfindahl found the net for Thunderhawks in the third period to push the lead to 9-0. The Lighting fought hard for the entire game but Grand Rapids skated away with a 9-0 win, with nine different players scoring for the black and orange.
