Gavin Hain powers the Thunderhawks to victory with 2 Goals Sunday

2015 Star of the North Bantam AA Champs...Grand Rapids

Sibley amped up the noise Sunday prior to their game against Grand Rapids.

The Star of the North Championship game featured Sibley and Grand Rapids. Both teams entered the finals with identical 3-1 records, both losing Saturday in their final Pool Play games. Sibley's route to the finals came with two wins over Jefferson (one in the Semis Saturday), a win over a Minneapolis, and a surprising loss to Duluth East. Grand Rapids had a similar path. Wins over Anoka and Eastview, followed by a surprising loss to St. Cloud. In the Semifinals they took out a quality Grand Forks team 6-3 Saturday night to gain a berth in the Finals.

Both teams have size, skill and two solid goaltenders. The result would likely rest on the special teams of both teams. The slight advantage would be to Grand Rapids...their special teams were impressive on Friday and Saturday and they held home ice advantage.

After a very fast start, where both teams had some chances, the game settled down. Grand Rapids took advantage of an early Sibley mistake as Gavin Hain took a Ryker Brazerol pass inside the zone on the wing and used his speed to fly past the defense to get to the net and beat Sibley Goalie Robbie Wolfe. The Thunderhawks would lead 1-0 after 1. Sibley had an early power play opportunity but did not get much going (a bad theme for the Warriors). Their best scoring chance came shortly after the PP when they had a 2-1 opportunity that was denied. Grand Rapids got their second goal of the game when they held the Sibley zone on a solid forechecking effort.  The puck was misplaid in the slot and Grand Rapids got the puck to the net and GR defenseman Michael Heitkamp finished it off.

Thirty second later, Sibley responded when  Jack Kubes got an unassisted wrap around goal that fooled GR Goalie Gabe Holum.  Grand Rapids almost stretched the lead back to 3-1 late in then 2nd when they had a power play opportunity. A wrist shot form the point was tipped in but  was disallowed for a high stick. At the end of two, GR lead 2-1.

Early in the third period, Sibley would get their second power play but once again was not able to get anything going.  Right after that, Grand Rapids turned up the pressure and Gavin Hain scored his second goal of the game after a puck ended up on Hain's stick behind the Sibley defense and the power forward put the puck past Wolfe to give Rapids a 3-1 lead.  Down by two goals, Sibley was given another man advantage that finally put some pressure on Grand Rapids.  They did not score on the power play but were rewarded right after it when a Payton Matsui shot found the back of the net.  Sibley took a time out, and pulled Wolfe for an extra attacker but could not get the puck past Rapids Goalie Gabe Holum.

After a crazy weekend, with a lot of upsets and dramatic twists and turns...our pick Grand Rapids walked away with their home tourney title.
