Jack Johnston scores for SPA in losing cause

Section 4A rivals, and highly ranked teams 5A Mahtomedi and 4A SPA didn't disappoint Tuesday night with an uptempo back and forth game, that showcased two great goaltenders, Andy Beran for SPA and Will Swanson for Mahtomedi.  Beran finished with 26 saves and Swanson with 22. " Andy delivered tonight, his save on the 2-1 tonight was a big time stop. He is the reason it was 2-2 after 1," said SPA Head Coach, Matt Funk.

The first period featured 4 goals, and lots of back and forth play.  Jack Johnston got the Spartans on the board first, with a nifty backhand move to beat Swanson, at the 5:27 mark of the first period.

The Zephyrs would respond with two goals, about seven minutes apart, the first by Luke Posner at 8:12 and Tim Kuivinen at the 15:45 mark.  Before ending the first period, SPA's Will Kelly tied the score with .2 seconds remaining in the first period.

In the third period the Zephyrs were able to tally the game winning goal, by Posner again.  After ringing a shot off the post, the junior forward flushed one past Beran to win it. Posner finished with three points, two goals and one assist. "They are so well coached and they work hard as one unit. Coach Poeschl and his staff always have their teams playing strong a team game in all phases. They won the game on the wall and played strong defensively," said Funk.

Up Next: Mahtomedi will take on Spring Lake Park Thursday and the Spartans will host East Grand Forks Saturday afternoon at The Drake.
