Black takes second straight Squirt B title for OMGHA

No. 2 ranked Osseo Maple Grove Black turned away Chaska Chan Purple 3-1 to claim the second consecutive Squirt B championship of the YHH Squirtacular Sunday in Andover. The Leafbirds used three unassisted goals by tournament MVP Joe Lewis, Blake Steenerson and Riley Bot to outlast the Stormhawks.

Cooper Hogan got the No. 6 ranked Stormhawks on the board in the first when he beat Nathan Stienessen with a laser top shelf. A shot that hit both the top and side  bar before falling into the net. Osseo would answer a few minutes later when Lewis would steal the puck in the offensive zone and beat CC goalie Max Maginnis through the five-hole to tie it.

In the second period, Steenerson would get the eventual game winner when he took the puck end-to-end and fired a shot that handcuffed Maginnis and went in. And in the third, Riley Bot went top shelf to give the Leafbirds the win.

Three Stars

3. Riley Bot, OMG - was a sparkplug of a player for Leafbirds, finally got rewarded for hard work late  in the game when he scored insurance goal.

2. Lucas Iversen, CC Purple - a tremendous talent that was constantly involved with the play, had several great chances.

1. Joe Lewis, OMG - great talent, had his way with B level hockey in Blaine this past weekend, makes players around him better.

The Goalies: Charlie Kuebelbeck and Nathan Stienessen combined to stop 91 percent of shots faced and a 1.33 goals against average for the Leafbirds.

The Coach: Erik Kukkonen, OMG - won two Squirtacular titles as coach of '13 and '14 OMG Squirt A teams, wins his third Sunday coaching the OMG Black.

Tyler Smith had two goals and an assist to lead No. 6 ranked Chaska Chan Purple to a 5-2 win over Mahtomedi White Sunday in the YHH Squirtacular Semifinal in Blaine. The Stormhawks out muscled the Zephyrs in the third period getting goals by Smith and Tyler Broten to clinch a berth in the championship game.

Tyler Schwieters and Corey Bohmert scored two second period goals for Mahtomedi to tie the game at 2, but Mason Long scored thirty seconds later to give the Stormhawks the lead for good. Max Maginnis turned away 19 of 21 shots to earn the win for the Stormhawks.

Osseo Maple Grove insured a finalist on Saturday night when both Black and White won in the quarterfinals. On Sunday they faced off for the third time, with one game ending in a tie and another a win by Black. The first period was a feeling out period, neither team really was tested. But the second period was a backyard brawl. Justin Kuharski scored both goals for the Black. The first one came in the opening minute and the second came on a five on three penalty for the Black.

Charlie Kuebelbeck turned away all 23 shots to get the shut out for Black as they advanced to the finals against Chaska Chan Purple.
