Jayce Hopia finishes a 2 on 1 for Minnetonka
Much like the Super Bowl, a match up of two top teams is often disappointing. On the eve of the big game, Shattuck, the top Bantam team in USA tier 1 hockey hosted the top Bantam team in Minnesota, Minnetonka. The game was anything but a let down.
The host Sabres scored first when former Minnetonka skater Griffin Streeter popped in a rebound off of a Grant Silianoff shot. The Skippers tied it when Clay Hanus beat Sabre goalie Derek Mullahy with a shot that weaved through traffic.
With the score tied at one after one, the teams traded goals in the second period. Tonka took the lead when Bobby Brink fed a breaking Jayce Hopia who beat Mullahy to give the Skippers a brief one goal lead. A minute later, the Sabres top line struck again. This time it was Boston University commit Robert Mastrosimone who pumped in a one-timer on a pretty passing play from line-mates Silianoff and Streeter.

After a brief intermission and flood, the teams buckled up for a great third period. The teams had several three-on-two and two-on-one chances in transition. In the middle of the third, the visiting Skippers were called for too many men on the ice. When in fact, they only had men on the ice - but the body language of the fifth skater taking the ice appeared like there was one too many. Then, Minnesota native Kaden Bohlsen would take advantage of the opportunity and give Shattuck the lead on the power play. Bohlsen, known for gritty play and a wicked shot, beat Tonka goalie Jon Howe top shelf.
Angling to tie the score, Minnetonka threw everything at the Sabres to tie the game. Several great chances were thwarted by Mullahy, the Scituate, MA native. With three minutes to go, Mason Hendrickson made a great individual effort and beat Mullahy to tie the score. The game ended in a tie, 3-3. To solve a winner...the boys held a shootout that featured some of the big names of american youth hockey. Cam York went first for the Sabres, he was stopped by Howe. Seemed like York got to Howe to fast and ran out of room prior to making a move. The Skippers got on the board first when one of their superstars Bobby Brink faked backhand and beat Mullahy on the forehand. Notre Dame commit, Grant Silianoff couldn't beat Howe as the Sabres second shooter...he temporarily had Howe beat, but was unable to beat him on the stuff. With the Howe save, all they needed was a goal by Jack Bayless to win. Bayless, arguably one of the best players in Minnesota, snuck a shot through the five hole for the "win."
Bobby Brink scores for Tonka in the shootout Saturday
Team Minnesota - of the six goals scored Saturday...five were scored by Minnesota players. A case could be made that the 2001 class of players in the state of hockey is as strong as any previous.
Clay Hanus, Minnetonka - all the tools to be the best defenseman in his grade...seems to add a new wrinkle to his game all the time.
Robert Mastrosimone, Shattuck - very productive almost every shift on Saturday, very strong on his skates...challenges the opposition at all times with pressure and puck possession.
Cam York, Shattuck - tremendous talent, with great hands and confidence
From the Glass: many of the players in Saturday's game knew each other Saturday. Several went to school together (Breakaway Academy, Chaska) and several played together and against each other for six year of off-season hockey (Blades and Machine). Saturday was like a class reunion. The friendships made the game fun to watch...the boys played hard, but not cheap. The skill on both sides was fun to watch.
