Breck's Matthew Conroy (7) scores in the second period of the Mustangs' Saturday win.
For an introduction to the fast-break offense employed by the Breck boys hockey team, you may need to turn to tapes of Pac-12 football.
“We do an up-tempo practice all the time,” Mustang head coach Les Larson said after his team outshout St. Paul Academy 40-21 en route to a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Breck’s Anderson Ice Arena.
“It’s kind of like the old Oregon Duck football, where everything is quick, everything’s done right,” added Larson.
Nearly everything was done right on Saturday for the Mustangs, the No. 4 ranked team in the latest Class 1A state coaches’ poll, with three different players scoring and sophomore Linden Olness turning in a 19-save performance in net.
Breck’s third line accounted for two of the team’s goals, with senior Evan Beniek and sophomore Matthew Conroy scoring in the first and second periods respectively.
Junior defenseman Nick Strom also scored in the win for the Mustangs (8-3-1).
Senior forward Dom Picciano scored both goals for the No. 3-1A Spartans, who’s record stands at 9-2-1 after having their seven-game winning streak snapped on Saturday.
Junior goaltender Andy Beran made an impressive 37 saves in the loss.
Larson praised the secondary scoring the Mustangs received from Beniek and Conroy, and said that the team is still in the process of perfecting its line combinations.
“We’ve been playing with our lines, tinkering,” Larson said.
“We’re still trying to figure out who we have.”
Dom Picciano (15) scored twice for SPA in the loss to Breck.
