Neither team gets late break in afternoon matinee

A game of inches

Moorhead and Breck skated to a 3-3 tie after three periods and one overtime in a non-conference tilt in Golden Valley Saturday. Breck had three brief leads -- one after the first and two in the second. Each time the Spuds would answer back, twice on the power play.

Senior Mitch Machlitt took advantage of some good Mustang pressure and scored on a loose puck in front. Breck lead 1-0 after the first...both teams had a few chances, the Mustangs were the only ones to convert.

Forty-two seconds into the second period Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe beat Breck goalie Linden Olness top shelf to tie the game at one. The two teams would trade power play goals a couple minutes later. First, Dalton Weigel showed why he is considered one of the best defensemen in the state when his wrister beat Spud goalie Lance Leonard. The Spuds answered with a pretty tic-tac pass when Carter Randklev fed Cole O'Connell for a tap in goal to tie it 2-2.

Lance Leonard made 35 saves Saturday for the Spuds

Breck would continue the see-saw when Carter Breitenfeldt would bang home a rebound past a defenseless Leonard to give the Mustangs a lead heading into the second period break. Right after the break, 2016 Bantam Player of the Year Ethan Frisch fired a rocket past Olness to convert the Spuds second power play goal to tie the game at 3-3.

Each team had a wave of chances to win the game. The Spuds big chances came at the end of regulation. On one flurry Olness slammed the door on two point blank chances for the Spuds. And with time running out, Carter Randklev got a loose puck in front all alone but was dragged down with a timely hooking penalty. In overtime, the tide turned in favor of the home team. The Mustangs had a golden opportunity when Grant Parrish fired a shot that deflected in the air and landed on top of the net and dribbled wide of the net.

Both teams showed great speed and skill. Breck gains more confidence as they push toward section playoffs. The Spuds leave the Twin Cities with a 1-0-1 record after a win Friday over Minnetonka. Despite a poor record against section 8AA opponents (2-2), they are the consensus top team in northwest Minnesota.

Carter Breitenfeldt scores for Breck Saturday

Carter Randklev will need special attention by his opponents this year

Three Stars

3. Carter Breitenfeldt, Breck - physical presence who had a hand in all three goals (1G/2A) for the Mustangs.

2. Mitch Machlitt, Breck - great energy, hands...very exciting player who makes it happen for Breck.

1. Carter Randklev, Moorhead - was the best player on the ice...is extremely hard to stop one on one. One of the state's best juniors.

Unsung

Evan Beniek, Breck - hard worker who plays with great speed and passion.

Carter Howell, Moorhead - senior defensman who logs a lot important minutes - very calming presence for the Spuds.

To Go To State

For both teams to make it to state, they will need great goaltending. Both goalies, Lance Leonard and Linden Olness turned away 30 plus shots and were in lock down mode for long stretches Saturday.
