Boulder Monarch loses CO state four times, finally wins it in '17

Boulder Monarch, 2017 CHSAA Champs

Fifth Time is the Charm

After losing in the state title game four straight  years, Boulder Monarch beat No. 1 ranked Regis Jesuit 2-1 to claim their school's first ever Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) title. The Coyotes all-time leading scorer Brendan Van Haute had a goal and an assist including the power play game winner in the the third period.

Logan Gorbitz stopped 26 shots to earn his team their second straight win over the Raiders. Combined with his late regular season 3-0 shutout that Gorbitz earned over the Jesuit, the Monarch net minder posted an impressive line (48 SV, 0.5 GAA, .979 SV%, SO, 2W) that includes a shutout, and now a 2-1 state championship victory.

"Logan was unreal and it came down to our power play, it's been unbelievable all year and they showed it again tonight" said Monarch Head Coach Jimmy Dexter of his team's triumph.  "Regis is so good, they took it to us in that first period, Gorby kept us in it and these guys kept fighting and we pulled it off."

Sound Familiar?

The win erased four straight losses, including a triple over time loss in 2015 to Cherry Creek. "We did this for the Alumni, it's for the Alumni, for the kids that couldn't come out on top" said Monarch Captain and game winning goal scorer Brendan Van Haute.  "That's who we're playing for, obviously playing for our teammates too, but boy did I want to go out on top."

In 2016, the Hermantown Hawks ended a very similar streak of their own in Minnesota - losing six straight, with a few in excruciating fashion.  In the winner's circle, their head coach whispered to a friend, "I'm so relieved this is over -- I'm going to sleep well tonight."

Pretty sure the boys from Boulder past and present slept well, too.
