Woodbury Preys On Hornets

In a matchup that featured numerous players that possess devastating offensive skills, it was goaltending that stole the show in the first of Saturday's quarterfinal duels.

Woodbury's Jack Hodgins made 33 saves to guide his Predators to a 2-1 win over Edina Saturday morning, playing a key role in shutting down an offense that racked up nine goals in Friday's win over White Bear Lake.

Ty Henricks notched an even-strength goal early in the third period to give the Predators the 2-1 lead that would become the final score, breaking a tie created by Peter Giertsen of Edina late in the first period.

Woodbury got on the board first with a goal from Jake Fisher, his third of the tournament.

Hawks Soar Past Ponies

The Hermantown train continues its journey through some of the top teams in the state, as the Hawks scored three times in both the first and the third periods in a 7-4 win over Stillwater.

The teams traded goals in the first, with each squad alternating scores. Max Plante tallied two goals in the first frame, with Ty Hanson adding a single score for the Hawks. Ty Tuccitto and Matthew Volkman scored for the Ponies in the first.

Brayden Hogue and Tuccitto scored the second for the Ponies, while Kade Kohanski netted a goal for the Hawks to push the game into the final period with the score tied 4-4.

Aaron Evjen, Max Plante, and Wyatt Carlson all scored once in the third for the Hawks, putting the game out of reach for the Ponies.

Max Plante showed off his hops in Saturday's win over Stillwater, a game in which he racked up a hat-trick.

A Thoreson of Nature

Gavyn Thoreson is good. There. We said it.

The Andover forward swooped and snuck around the Osseo-Maple Grove defense for three full periods, totaling all five of Andover's goals to lead the Huskies to a hard-fought 5-3 victory over the Leafbirds.

Thoreson scored twice in the first and second periods before delivering the final dagger in the third, where he split the Leafbird defense before finishing with a nifty backhand move to make the score 5-2.

In addition to the offensive outburst from Thoreson, Andover goaltender Louden McCoy stood on his head, repeatedly denying the scoring chances generated by the Leafbirds.

Beck Picconatto, Danny Nelson, and Jay Ellingson all scored once for Osseo-Maple Grove in the loss.

Louden McCoy's play in Saturday's win shares the limelight with Gavyn Thoreson's five goals for the Huskies.

Getting Their Irish Up

The Rosemount Irish don't need luck because they have depth instead.

Four different players scored goals, including three players netting two scores each, as the Irish rolled to a 7-3 quarterfinal victory over Chaska/Chanhassen on Saturday afternoon.

Charlie Stramel scored the first of his two goals in the first period, a stanza that ended with the Irish nursing the one-goal lead that certainly wouldn't stand against a talented Stormhawks' team.

The Irish refused to hand Chaska/Chanhassen the momentum entering the second period, rattling off three goals to stretch their lead to 4-0 before the Stormhawks got on the board with a goal by Brodie Ziemer. Fortifying the lead for Rosemount in the second were Lucas Kickhofel, Caden Hegarty, and Stramel.

Hegarty would score his second goal in the third period, and Henry Stenger tacked on two more for the Irish. Daniel Block and Gracyn Sawchyn tallied goals for the Stormhawks in the final frame.

Caden Hegarty scored two goals for Rosemount in Saturday's win over Chaska/Chanhassen.

Players to Watch

Max Plante, Hermantown

An established playmaker, Plante showcased his scoring ability on Saturday, totaling three goals to lead the Hawks to a win in the quarterfinals.

Caden Hegarty, Rosemount

Hegarty was all over the ice on Saturday, notching a pair of goals in the Irish win over Chaska/Chanhassen.

Simon Houge, Woodbury

A speed demon and a pest on the penalty kill, Houge's motor never stops running a full tilt.

 Louden McCoy, Andover

McCoy held off a late charge by Osseo-Maple Grove to cement the win for his Huskies. Solid lateral movement combined with a quick and reflexive butterfly.

Simon Houge does it all for the Woodbury Predators.
