Gold Bracket Recap

Advancing to the championship of any tournament merits a celebration of sorts, but when you advance to the final of your own competition in dominant fashion victory tastes a special kind of sweet.

Osseo-Maple Grove cruised into the Battle for the Blue Ox final with a 5-2 win over Wayzata on Saturday night, fittingly with five players tallying goals in the win. The Leafbirds defeated Prior Lake 6-1 in the quarterfinal round earlier on Saturday.

Joining the Leafbirds in the Sunday title fight will be Eden Prairie, as the Eagles completed a pair of victories on Saturday. The Eagles snuck past White Bear Lake in the quarterfinal round by a score of 4-3, then thumped Grand Forks (ND) 6-3 in the semifinal matchup. Jackson Blake recorded his second hat-trick of the tournament in the win over the Aviators.

Black Bracket Reap

The Black Bracket will be decided on Sunday between Chaska-Chanhassen and Osseo-Maple Grove (BA).

Aptly-named, the Stormhawks flew to two victories on Saturday by a combined score of 10-5. Game one featured a 6-4 win for the Stormhawks over Elk River, followed by a 4-1 win over Lakeville North in the nightcap.

The Leafbirds earned wins over Centennial and Andover by scores of 6-4 and 4-3 respectively to earn their shot at the title. The finale between the Leafbirds and the Huskies concluded a spirited affair of Black Bracket play.

Orange Bracket Recap

Unfortunately for the Orange Bracket, neither of the teams playing the final wear orange.

Moorhead, the only team donning the mix of red and yellow that had a chance at the Orange Bracket championship bowed out on Saturday after falling to Alexandria 6-5 in a thrilling shootout.

Alexandria tied the game with two minutes to play on a goal by Josiah Groholz before a marathon 15-player shootout ended with the Cardinals on top.

It was the second shootout of the day for Alexandria, as the Cardinals edged Fargo (ND) 3-2 in their first game on Saturday.

Representing the flip side of a road to the finals, Woodbury tapped into the predatory ways, hunting down scoring chances a capitalizing on them.

The Predators sank the Skippers of Minnetonka (BA) 6-1 to open their play on Saturday before thumping Western North Dakota 9-3 in the Orange Bracket semifinals.

Players to Watch

Jackson Blake, Eden Prairie

The diminutive forward recorded four goals over two games on Saturday, showcasing his puck sense and knack for finding open space.

Hayden Helgeson, Grand Forks (ND)

A full-grown force, Helgeson strength and skill in the face-off circle enabled the Aviators to make an appearance in the semifinals.

Michael Sweetland, Stillwater

Sweetland has been Mr. Clutch for the Ponies this weekend, scoring at crucial times in both of the Ponies' wins.

Christopher Loken, Alexandria

Rock-solid goaltender Loken stood on his head as the Cardinals completed the comeback against Moorhead in Saturday's Orange Bracket semifinals.

Lleyton Roed, White Bear Lake

Roed helped steer the Bears to the finals of the finals of the crossover Gold Bracket with his exceptional play. Roed has totaled six assists and seven points for the Bears.
