Big Games from Little Falls

Matthew Fillipi hat a Hatty Saturday for the Flyers

Little Falls and Alexandria claimed two of the three District 15 spots in the North Region with victories Saturday in Little Falls. After action wrapped up Saturday, Northern Lakes and Fergus Falls will meet Sunday to battle for the third and final spot.

Matthew Filippi recorded a hat trick as the Little Falls Flyers tallied three third period goals to record a 5-2 win over Fergus Falls.  After a scoreless first period, Coltan Parain gave Fergus Falls the first lead of the game.  Matthew Filippi responded for Little Falls to tie the game at one and his second goal a minute later off a Hayden Johnson pass gave the Flyers their first lead.  Michael Debrito scored a short-handed goal late in the second to tie the game at two to end the second.

Little Falls killed a carry-over penalty to start the third and Joseph Majerle, Gunnar Gustafoson, and Matthew Filippi lit the lamp to give the Flyers a 5-2 victory and punch a ticket to the North region tournament in Detroit Lakes.

After a scoreless first period between Alexandria and Northern Lake, the game turned out to be anything but a defensive battle as both offenses went into high gear during the second period.  Peyton Doty got things going for the Cardinals as he scored back to back goals early in the second to give Alexandria the advantage.  Alexandria would build the lead to 3-0 when Josiah Gronholz scored his first goal of the day.  Caiden Kjelstom gave the Lightning hope when he scored a pretty backhand goal and after two periods Alexandria was up 3-1.

Alexandria squashed the Lightning hopes of a rally as Josiah Gronholz recorded his second goal of the day early in the third.  Spencer Olson would complete the Alexandria scoring and finish off the Lightning as the Cardinals advanced with a 5-1 win.

Alex and Little Falls play Sunday for seeding to Regionals.

Otters to face Lightning for Final Spot

After a scoreless first period between Fergus Falls and Wadena, the Otters took out their frustrations on Wadena scoring five second- period goals and then two in the third to skate past Wadena and stay alive.  The 7-0 win earned them an opportunity to face Northern Lakes Sunday morning.

Caiden Kjelstrom gave the Lightning the start they needed as he tallied twice in the first period and after one period the Lightning led Detroit Lakes 3-0.  The Lakers would not go quietly though as two second-period goals cut the Lighting lead to 3-2 after two periods.  Hunter Nybakken scored in the third for the Lightning sealing the Lakers fate and setting up a Sunday match-up with Fergus Falls and a trip to Detroit Lakes for regions on the line.
