Select 15′s Halfway Through the St. Cloud Camp

White Team’s Vaughan Ahrens clears the puck out of the deep slot

At the end of Monday, the Select 15’s are halfway through the evaluation camp in St. Cloud.  Game summaries for the Monday games between the Red and White teams and Gray and Light Blue are provided below; box scores for Saturday and Sunday games are provided at the end of this article.

Monday afternoon, the White beat the Red soundly 6-0 soundly in the first of two scheduled games.  The Red team had won their Saturday and Sunday games; the White had split their first two.  The Red team looked to be the favorite, and they came out firing.  The Red pressured White’s goalie Vaughan Ahrens in the first 18 minutes of the opening half, but couldn’t score.  The big goalie made it look easy.

With 5 minutes left in opening half, the White forwards took the game to the Red.  Their pressure resulted in Defenseman Peter Heimbold scoring off a melee in front of the Red net with Blake Neumann getting the assist.  White forward, Max Zimmer, then went to work, scoring two unassisted goals.  The first came at the 3 minute mark with the White on the power play.  Zimmer broke through the Red defense and buried the puck in the upper left corner from the right faceoff circle to give the White a 2-0 lead.  The second came in the last minute of play in the first half.

The second half was dominated by White.  Heimbold scored his second goal of the game, taking a nice pass from Kyle Klatt in the slot and burying the puck to make a 4-0 game at the 18 minute mark.  At the 15 minute mark, the weirdest play of the day happened.  Klatt and Neumann executed a neat passing play that set Tyler Bump up in the slot.  Bump put a high hard shot

high into the net for a goal.  But the puck rebounded on the fly to the top of the crease.  It happened so fast that the refs lost track and while the White were celebrating, two Red forwards took off with the puck but failed to score on the two on none rush.  To the refs credit, the game was stopped and after a short conference the goal was awarded to the White.  The final score came when Zach Lembrecht broke right crossing the blue line and scored from the right faceoff circle.  Kobe Roth got the assist.

White’s line of Klatt, Neumann and Bump had a good game.  Zach Starz played well at wing for the White.  Red’s line of Matthew Freytag, Mitch Dolter, and Trevor Cornelius applied the most of the Red pressure.  Jacob Olson had a good game at defense for the Red, Toby Sengvongxay and goalie Ahrens played tough defense for the White.

The second game of the afternoon matched the Gray and the Light Blue.  The game was fast paced with the Light Blue jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first half only to be tied by the Gray late in the half.  Cade Gleekel scored Light Blue’s first goal at the 15 minute mark.  Trevor Selk and David Brumm got the assists.  Blue kept the pressure on scoring 5 minutes later.  Ben Newhouse was given credit for scoring the second goal coming into the crease to knock in a Codee Brace shot, but Brace got the goal.  His shot rebounded off the Gray defense.

Trailing 2-0, the Gray forwards started to roll.  A tough shift by the Gray’s line led by Jacob Roth started to shift the play to Light Blue’s zone.  At the 4 minute mark, the Gray’s defenseman Jordan Kiehr scored to cut the lead to 2-1.  Marc Sullivan and Alec Baer got the assists.  Lawrence Jungwirth tied the score 2-2 with 90 seconds left in the half.

The Light Blue came out playing tough in the second half, but they could not beat Gray’s goalie Kris Klatt.  Klatt had a great second half shutting down the Blue on numerous rushes.  Gray’s Jake Moelk scored the winning goal at the 9 minute mark beating the Blue goalie from the left faceoff circle high and left.  The puck found a small gap between the goalie’s arm and the pipe.  Gray’s Larry Jungwirth  scored an insurance goal at the 6 minute mark deflecting a pass from the blue line past the Blue’s goalie to end the scoring 4-2.

Gray’s goalie, Klatt, had to withstand a tough final two minutes, facing a 6 on 4 and a 6 on 3 Gray attack as the second half ended.  Klatt was the outstanding goalie in this game.  Light Blue’s Christiano Versich had a good game at forward.  Newhouse played a solid defense for the Light Blue.  The Gray line centered by Roth with Jungwirth  and Jacob Riesdorfer at wings played a tough game; the Gray line of Baer, Garin, and Sullivan played poorly failing to generate much offense despite being on the ice for most of two second half power plays.
