Class AA Rankings

Lorelai Nelson's two goals helped No. 4-2A Edina to a 6-2 victory over No. 7-2A Rogers last Tuesday.

1. Gentry Academy (4-0)

After knocking off top-ranked Andover, the Stars combined to beat Sartell/Sauk Rapids and St. Cloud 17-1 over the weekend. St. Cloud State commit Alexa Hanrahan tallied four goals and seven points in the two victories, her first points of the season.

2. Andover (4-1)

The Huskies topped previous No. 1 Minnetonka on the road last week, pushing them back into the top two. The loss to Gentry Academy keeps Andover in the second slot for now.

The Huskies will play Northwest Suburban Conferences this week, taking on Rogers Tuesday, then Armstrong/Cooper next Saturday.

3. Minnetonka (4-1)

The loss against Andover doesn’t necessarily hurt, considering the state’s top three Class 2A teams are nearly interchangeable, but the Skippers find themselves ranked No. 3 this week. The Skippers rebounded after the loss to Andover with a 6-0 win over Brainerd/Little Falls, and will take to the road for games against Farmington and Chaska/Chanhassen this week.

4. Edina (3-1)

The Hornets thumped Rogers 6-2 in their lone game last week, getting two goals from Lorelai Nelson to give the high-flying freshman her team-leading sixth and seventh points of the season. Hill-Murray is on the hockey for this coming Thursday for the Hornets, with Holy Family on tap for Saturday.

5. Maple Grove (4-0)

The Crimson keep rolling with wins over Blake (6-1) and Mounds View/Irondale (7-0), powered by Penn State commit Stella Retrum’s four goals and eight points in the two games. Retrum is now fifth in the state in scoring, with seven goals and 15 points through six games.

6. Hill-Murray (3-0)

The Pioneers scored two goals in each period to earn a 6-1 win over North Wright County last week, getting three points each from sophomore Ella Hornung and eighth-grader Emily Pohl. Blaine, No. 4-2A Edina, and South St. Paul are on deck for the Pioneers this week.

7. Rogers (1-1)

The Royals benefit from a dash of chaos in the last ranking slots and stand pat for the week at No. 7, despite losing to No. 4-2A Edina 6-2. The Hornets pulled away from the Royals with three goals over the final two periods, cracking open what had been a 3-2 game after the first frame.

After Alexa Backmann got the start in the team’s first two games of the season, the Royals could roll with Lauren Larson between the pipes on Tuesday against Buffalo and possibly on Saturday against Andover.

8. Benilde-St. Margaret’s

Last year, it took Benilde-St. Margaret’s until Jan. 8 to put five goals on the board in a single game. This season, it only took until Thanksgiving.

The Red Knights downed Wayzata 5-2 last week, getting goals from five players and a combined two goals and three assists from freshman Ellie Stewart and sophomore Ella Pasqua. Matched with sophomore Kendall Hassler, who is tied for second on the team with four points, the Red Knights may have found their top offensive unit.

9. Moorhead (2-1)

The Spuds lost to (barely) unranked Blake 4-3 in their only game last week, and the one-goal defeat falls in line with the previous season’s results. During the 2021-2022 campaign, five of the team’s nine losses came by a single goal.

Moorhead will host Elk River/Zimmerman in a rare Monday evening game, then hit the road for three contests to open December.

10. Stillwater (2-2)

Despite not playing last week, Stillwater hangs around the top 10 for the moment, with teams like Blake and Bemidji circling for the final spot in the rankings.

When the Ponies host Mounds View/Irondale on Tuesday, the first of three straight Suburban East Conference battles, it will have been 10 days since the 5-0 loss against No. 3-2A Minnetonka.

Kendall Hassler is tied for second among all Benilde-St. Margaret's skaters with four points in three games.

Class A Rankings

Talya Hendrickson racked up nine points in No. 1-1A Warroad's 18-0 win over East Grand Forks last week.

1. Warroad (5-0)

After starting the season with games against the state's No. 2 and No. 3 Class 1A teams, the Warriors took on East Grand Forks and Simley, outscoring those two opponents 27-0.

Ouch.

Bemidji State commit Talya Hendrickson racked up three goals and nine points in the win over the Green Wave, while Rylee Bartz carried the mantle with two goals and six points against Simley.

2. Proctor/Hermantown (3-1)

Proctor/Hermantown did not play over the last week. The Mirage will be back in action with a trio of road games, starting with a Friday, Dec. 2 tilt with Champlin Park/Coon Rapids.

3. Orono (4-1-1)

The Spartans bounced back after a 3-1 loss to No. 1-1A Warroad, thumping New Prague 10-1 and then edging Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 2-0 to earn their third and fourth wins of the season. Zoe Lopez and Maddy Kimbrel were the primary catalysts of the win against New Prague, with both skaters registering four points apiece.

4. Crookston (5-0)

A 4-2 win over 2022 Class 2A State Tournament participant Northfield vaults Crookston into the top four. Taylor Field, Cassie Solheim, Emma LaPlante, and Brekken Tull each scored once for the Pirates in the win over the Raiders, with goaltender Kambelle Freije stopping 25 of 27 shots.

The win earned the Pirates the ultimate prize in this past weekend's Ralph Englestad Thanksgiving Arena Thanksgiving Tournament in Thief River Falls.

5. Holy Angels (3-0)

Zoe Rimstad posted a 25-save shutout for Holy Angels in last week's 5-0 win over Breck, giving the Stars their third consecutive victory.

The Stars' switch with Crookston in the rankings is based upon the strength of the Pirates' victory.

Edina is doing Edina-things so far...winning when it matters. The top-ranked Hornets lose to Stillwater earlier in the week, but dial it in Sunday to win the home tourney. The top-three teams have separated themselves a little, but still waiting to see how good this Blaine team can be versus a top-three.

Tonka and Woodbury duke it out yesterday...this time the Predators win.  Should be a fun series of games with those two this year. Grand Rapids is 10-0 and lurking at #3. District 10 is well represented with Anoka-Rogers, Centennial/SLP and Andover filling up the middle of the top-10.
