Little Falls at Bemidji (Jan. 3, 7:15 PM)

Matt Filippi, Little Falls

Here's an intriguing outstate battle between Section 5A Little Falls and Section 8AA Bemidji. Will the Flyers be heading to Dairy Queen after this one, or will the Lumberjacks have them feeling down on a long bus-ride home?

Little Falls is coming off a 5-4 loss to Wadena-Deer Creek. The Flyers are led by senior Matt Filippi (8-7-15), junior Carter Oothoudt (6-6-12), and sophomore Joey Welinski (4-2-6) for an offense that has been inconsistent this season.

On defense, seniors Coltin Johnson (2-6-8) and Matthew Cooper (0-6-6), as well as sophomore Luke Avery (4-2-6), give the Flyers an active defense corps that likes to get involved at both ends of the ice. The penalty kill has been a strength of Little Falls, although it took a bit of a hit in their loss to Wadena-Deer Creek, shutting opponents down at an 84.4% rate.

Senior goaltender Richie Varriano (.920 save percentage) has been Little Falls' starter throughout most of the season.

Bemidji is coming off a 3-0 victory over Elk River/Zimmerman that should give them a boost come Section 8AA seeding time. The Lumberjacks attack is led by seniors Wyatt Mattfield (4-8-12) and Nick Yavarow (5-5-10), as well as sophomore Benjamin O'Leary (3-3-6). Scoring has been a challenge this season, and a 10.5% power play hasn't helped in that regard.

On defense, seniors Casey Rupp (2-5-7) and Cael Knutson (3-1-4) and puck-moving sophomore Noah Mannausau (2-6-8) give Bemidji robust two-way play.

At goaltender, the Lumberjacks have rotated between junior Alex Schaefer (1.92 goals against average) and sophomore Tate Metcalf (.893 save percentage) this season.
