Benilde-St. Margaret's at St. Thomas Academy (Jan. 5, 7:00 PM)

Drew Stewart, Benilde-St. Margaret's

This should be an exciting showdown against two Class AA private schools as Benilde-St. Margaret's battles St. Thomas Academy.

Benilde-St. Margaret's is coming off a 7-1 rout of Lakeville South. The Red Knights are led up front by juniors Drew Stewart (Notre Dame commit, 9-12-21), Michael Risteau (Western Michigan commit, 7-5-12), and seniors Wes Berg (4-6-10) and Ryan Baird (4-6-10). Benilde-St. Margeret's power play has been a source of strength, finding the twine 33.3% of the time.

On defense, juniors Mason Stenger (1-6-7) and Nick Palmer (1-0-1), as well as sophomore Mace'o Phillips (1-6-7), lead a solid, if not flashy, Red Knights defense corps. Freshman defenseman Mason Minor (0-6-6) is showing a lot of promise.

Junior goaltender Mason McElroy (3.21 goals against average) has carried most of the Red Knights' goaltending duties this season.

St. Thomas Academy is coming off a 4-1 victory over Moorhead. The Cadets are led by seniors Tommy Cronin (Colgate commit, 15-10-25), Zach Howard (4-9-13), and Jordan Tacheny (5-2-7). Sophomores Max Candon (5-5-10) and Will Dosan (4-3-7) have impressed and given Mike Randolph's squad some valuable secondary scoring.

On defense, senior Sean Burns (1-1-2), junior Brody Deitz (1-4-5), and sophomore Jake Faith (0-6-6) provide St. Thomas Academy size and stability on the back end and are a big reason they only give up 1.64 goals per game.

St. Thomas Academy has rotated between senior Tyler Magozzi (1.16 goals against average) and sophomore Cody Niesen (2.20 goals against average) this season.
