Great Plains, CYA 2-0 After Day One

The 2004 Division could come down to the only undefeated teams after day one, as Great Plains and the Chicago Young Americans swept through their competition on Friday in Bloomington. 

Great Plains scored a close 4-2 win over a gritty Arizona Jr. Coyotes squad during the morning session, with Jimmy Snuggerud scoring twice in the second period to break a 2-2 tie. Defensemen Reed Kluender and Nick Baer also scored for Great Plains, while John Lines and Colton Langkow tallied goals for the Jr. Coyotes. Great Plains followed that win with a 9-0 win over Team Illinois, highlighted by a two-goal, five-point performance by Jimmy Clark. Tyler Grahme racked up a hat-trick and added an assist en route to being named Player of the Game. 

A 5-3 win over the Madison Capitols pushed the Chicago Young Americans' record to 2-0. CYA kicked off the day with a 4-0 win over the Gentry Galaxy, paced by a goal and an assist by Kendal Geier. Owen Just led the team to its win over Madison with a hat-trick and an assist.

Team Illinois scored a shootout win over Madison in the first game of the day, as Nathan Sarallo scored the game-winner during the one-on-one. Sarallo also scored during regulation for Team Illinois, as did Isac Martin and Isaac Barrett. Madison's goals came from J.J. Wiebusch, Nick McCann, and Landon Fleming. Team Illinois will enter the second day of competition with a 1-0-0-1 record.

The Arizona Jr. Coyotes rebounded after the opening loss to Great Plains with a 4-1 win over the Gentry Galaxy in the nightcap, powered by two goals from Player of the Game Nikolas Benjamin. Forward Jaden Lipinski dished out three assists in the win. The Jr. Coyotes will face the Chicago Young Americans and Team Illinois on Saturday.  

Madison and Gentry will both enter the second day of competition with identical 0-2 records.

Mikey DeAngelo, Team Illinois

DeAngelo showcased great speed on Friday, accelerating past opposing defenders and breaking through the neutral zone multiple times. 

Jay Fairchild, Madison Capitols

The goaltender stood on his head in the Capitols' opening loss on Friday, making 43 saves in the shootout defeat at the hands of Team Illinois. 

Tyler Grahme, Great Plains 

Grahme made up for lost time on Friday, playing in just the second of Great Plains' games and totaling a hat-trick and an assist. Grahme earned Player of the Game honors for his performance. 

Jaden Lipinski, Arizona Jr. Coyotes

Lipinski sparked one of the "best goals I've seen in two years" according to a YHH employee who worked the Coyotes' 4-1 win over the Gentry Galaxy. The forward's soft hands and quality ice-vision helped him to total four assists on Friday.

Owen Just, Chicago Young Americans 

Just stormed his way to three goals and an assist in CYA's second game of the day, a 5-3 victory over the Madison Capitols. Just was relentless on the forecheck and opportunistic in the offensive zone.  


Jay Fairchild stopped 43 of 46 shots in a tough-luck loss on Friday.
