Osseo-Maple Grove Wins Battle of the Birds

There was more on the line in Saturday night's Battle for the Blue Ox than just bragging rights and a berth in the tournament finals.

The Leafbirds and Stormhawks dueled for the right to be called the best of mashed-up bird mascots, in a game that could be dubbed forever as the Feather Cup.

Osseo-Maple Grove managed to pluck Chaska-Chanhassen in this battle for the nest, scoring four consecutive goals in the second period and held on for a 5-3 victory. Max Burkholder opened the scoring with a rocket-wrister from the slot in the first period, but after a minute-long respite between periods, the Leafbirds got goals from Chayton Fischer, Cameron Elder, Finn Brink, for a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Fischer opened the scoring again in the third period, stretching the lead to 4-1 before Johnny Knapp slowed the bleeding for the Stormhawks to make the score 4-2. Ethan Sillerud netted an empty-net goal for Osseo-Maple Grove's fifth tally, and Chaska-Chanhassen's Burkholder scored his second goal with 10 seconds left for the 5-3 final.

Osseo-Maple Grove advanced to the Gold Bracket finals with a 5-3 win over Chaska/Chanhassen.

Prior Lake Holds Off Andover 3-2

Prior Lake prefers to advance through the bracket the hard way.

The Lakers needed strong third periods in both the quarterfinals and semifinals on their way to the Blue Ox title game, as Max Revak tallied a goal with just 2:23 left in the final stanza on Saturday night to give Prior Lake a 3-2 win over Andover and a date with Osseo-Maple Grove in the finals.

Riley Dueber opened the scoring for Prior Lake in the second period, a 1-0 lead that was quickly extinguished by a goal from Andover's Weston Knox. Knox took several steps into the Prior Lake zone from the blue line and sent a shot from the high slot past Prior Lake's Trevor Boschee. Will Schumacher continued his strong day for the Lakers with a goal in the final minute of the second period to send the Lakers into the break with a 2-1 lead.

Jake Pierson knotted the score on the power play with a little over 11 minutes to play in the third period, as the teams entered a seesaw battle over who could take the most penalties in the final period of play before Revak posted the game-winner on a shot from the face-off circle to the left of Andover goaltender Bobby Hendricks.

Prior Lake will take on Osseo-Maple Grove for the Blue Ox crown on Sunday afternoon.
