Ava Lindsay celebrates after one of Breck's 11 goals on Friday.

Breck 11, Mound Westonka 1

There are fast starts, and then there are Breck-style fast starts.

The Mustangs racked up six goals in the first period of Friday’s Class 1A State Tournament semifinal and added four more scores in the second period to thump No. 3 seed Mound Westonka 11-1 at the Xcel Energy Center.

“We knew they had a very good goaltender, and one of ht message we gave the kids before the game was made sure to get a lot of shots and crash the net,” Breck assistant coach Steve Persian said after the win.

Mound Westonka goaltender Taylor Smith entered the game with a record of 22-0-5 and is one of five finalists for the Senior Goaltender of the Year Award, but Smith the Whitehawk defense were no match for Breck’s efficient small-triangle offense. The second-seeded Mustangs (20-8) repeatedly attacked the Whitehawk zone with waves of players, routinely catching the Whitehawks (23-1-5) out of position.

“Our young kids really played like young kids,” Mound Westonka co-head coach Bob Kuehl said, adding that letting the Breck forwards go three-on-one in the Whitehawk zone was a recipe for disaster. “You’re not gonna win that battle,” Kuehl said.

Smith finished with 31 saves on 42 shots for the Whitehawks, while backup goaltender Sarah Larson finished the last five minutes of the game without seeing a Breck shot.

Both Olivia Mobley and Sadie Lindsay scored twice in the first period en route to hat-tricks in the win, with five other Mustangs tallying single goals. Mobley and Ally Qualley finished as team-leaders with four points each.

Two of Sadie Lindsay’s goals were assisted by her sister Ava, who credits the duo’s childhood games with their knack for finding each other on the ice.

“Growing up, we always played pond hockey together so we just kind of have that chemistry,” Ava said. “I always know where Sadie is.”

Ava is an eighth-grader at Breck, while Sadie is a sophomore.

Sadie said that sharing the Xcel Energy Center ice with her sister is a dream come true.

“It’s so fun, growing up watching girls’ games here at the X, we always dreamed of playing here ourselves someday,” Sadie said. “Making it here and being able to play with my sister and sharing that dream has been really special.”

Taylor Smith finished with 31 saves for Mound Westonka in the loss.
