Luverne vs. (1) Breck, 6 P.M.

Breck's Olivia Mobley set school records with 49 goals and 84 points this season.

Making its first state tournament appearance since 2016, Luverne enters the week armed with one senior (Claire Baustian) and a boatload of underclassmen on its roster for 2020.

Fortunately for the Cardinals (22-4-1), the lack of experience hasn’t hurt the overall stat lines of their leading scorers, with freshman forward Kamryn Van Batavia racking up 44 goals so far this season good for third in the state. Van Batavia has added 27 assists for 71 points, followed by sophomore defender Reghan Bork (22-24-46) and junior forward Rylee Gee (14-28-42) in scoring. Sophomore goaltender Cheyenne Schultz looks to be the starter on Wednesday, having won both section games for the Cardinals and posting a GAA of 1.55 and four shutouts during the 2019-2020 season.

Like Edina in the Class 2A preview, there’s not much to say about top-seeded Beck that can’t be gleaned from the numbers or what’s been written before. With the newly-minted Star-Tribune Metro Player of the Year Olivia Mobley pacing the forward crop with 49 goals and 84 points, the Mustangs don’t lack for scoring threats. Senior forward Ally Qualley has totaled 53 assists and 67 points of her own and is usually the catalyst for Breck’s number-one line.

All of Breck’s six losses this season have come against strong Class 2A opponents, and four of those six defeats have been by a single goal. The defending champions are the favorite of the field again.
