Breck 9, Rochester Lourdes 1

Ashley Halverson scores one of Breck's nine goals during the Mustangs' 9-1 semifinal win over Rochester Lourdes.

Where does Breck, the No. 1 seed in the Class 1A State Tournament and top-ranked team for the entire regular season, stand among the opponents Rochester Lourdes (18-11) has played this year?

“They’re the best team that we’ve seen all year,” Eagles coach Jeff True said after the Mustangs thumped the No. 5 seed 9-1 in Friday’s semifinals.

“Hands down, not close.”

Breck proved that in the win, with everyone from Ms. Hockey finalist and Quinnipiac commit Olivia Mobley to eighth-grader Hannah Halverson piling up numbers on the scoresheet. Mobley finished with four goals and five points, while Halverson potted two goals of her own.

“We just weren’t able to sustain anything for more than three or four shifts,” True said. “Our forecheck wasn’t moving the way it was a few nights ago or at the end of the regular season.”

Even with a significant difference in score, the game was far from perfect for the Mustangs (24-6).

“I think that we started off pretty slow, and it’s not really the start we need tomorrow to be competitive,” Breck coach Steve Persian said.

The Mustangs also ran into penalty trouble in the second, being whistled for three fouls within 46 seconds of each other.

“That hurts the team, it hurts (the) momentum of the team,” Mobley said. “Being able to kill that off was huge from a momentum standpoint.”

With her four goals and five points, Mobley now has seven goals and nine points in two tournament games.

With her final high school contest looming, Mobley can hardly believe tomorrow will be her last day in a Breck uniform.

“It’s wild,” Mobley said with a smile. “I never thought this day would come.”
