Class AA

Hannah Christenson (middle) lifted Andover to a 1-0 win over preseason No. 1 Minnetonka on Nov. 13.

1. Andover (3-0)

The Huskies defeated preseason No. 1 Minnetonka on Nov. 13, notching the game-winner late in the third period on a five-on-three power-play chance. The Huskies also picked up wins over preseason No. 8 Benilde-St. Margaret's and No. 9 Gentry Academy since the season started.

Madison Brown leads Andover in scoring with four points, and Courtney Stagman has played well in net, stopping 66 of 69 shots and recording a shutout.

2. Edina (2-0)

A trip the port city of Duluth yielded a pair of wins for the Hornets, as they downed Duluth Marshall 8-0 and Duluth 8-1, allowing just 11 combined shots. Not a particularly strenuous roadtrip for the Hornets, but good teams win the games they should win, and great teams dominate the games they should dominate.

Berit Lindborg has been an early standout, notching three goals and seven points over the first two games of the season.

3. Minnetonka (3-1)

The Skippers rebounded from the Andover loss with a 4-3 overtime win over No. 4 Stillwater and a 6-1 win over perennial Section 8AA contender Brainerd/Little Falls.

Grace Sadura scored the game-winner against the Ponies and leads the Skippers with seven goals and nine points so far. Following Sadura are Ava Lindsay (seven assists) and Josie Hemp (4-2-6).

4. Centennial/Spring Lake Park (3-0)

The Cougars handled Burnsville 6-1, Forest Lake 6-0, and Roseau 5-2 to open the season, getting production from most of the roster. The Cougars have not allowed a goal in the third period so far, and their power play has converted on six of 15 attempts.

Upperclassmen Megan Goodreau (5-4-9) and Lauren O'Hara (4-5-9), both Division I commits, lead the team in scoring, and seventh-grader Jaycee Chatleain (4-1-5) has impressed during his first few high school games. Kaitlin Groess has stopped 73 of 76 shots while playing every minute to open the year.

5. Holy Family Catholic (2-0-1)

Maddie Kaiser didn't waste any time getting on the scoresheet at the varsity level after spending last season with the Fire's junior varsity due to transfer rules.

The Minnesota commit assisted on the Fire's first goal of the season, then scored the game-winning goal in overtime of Holy Family Catholic's 3-2 win over No. 1-1A Warroad.

Since then, the Fire has defeated Shakopee and tied Maple Grove. It's early, but the ingredients are there for Holy Family to make a deep run into the spring.

6. Stillwater (2-1)

Edging Section 4AA rival Hill-Murray 2-1 on opening night was big for the Ponies, and they showed well despite falling to No. 3-2A Minnetonka 4-3 in overtime. The Ponies bounced back with a 7-1 win over Park of Cottage Grove.

Josie St. Martin leads the team in scoring so far with three goals and four points, spearheading an offensive attack that features five players with three points each.

7. Wayzata (4-0)

The Trojans have started fast, taking home victories over nonconference foes Champlin Park/Coon Rapids, Eagan, Hill-Murray, and Chaska/Chanhassen. The win over the Pioneers pushes the Trojans into the top-10.

Ohio State commit Sloane Matthews has been a force offensively, racking up five goals and 11 points through four games. Annika Lavender has stopped 62 go 65 shots in goal, and has two shutouts on the season.

8. Rosemount (3-0)

Don't call the Irish lucky.

Rosemount loaded the front end of its schedule this season, and the Irish have been up to the task, defeating Chisago Lakes 6-0, Gentry Academy 5-4, and Eastview 2-1, with the last two wins coming in overtime. That's three straight wins over teams that were in YHH's preseason Class AA top-10 or Class A top-5.

Minnesota State commit Whitney Tuttle has played the hero, scoring both overtime game-winners for the Irish. Tuttle has totaled five goals and 10 points so far to lead the Irish, followed by freshman Sophie Stramel (2-4-6).

9. Benilde-St. Margaret’s (0-1-1)

The good news? The Red Knights have gone down to the wire in both of their games to start the season.

The bad news? They haven’t been able to win one yet.

A 3-2 loss to No. 1-2A Andover and a 1-1 tie with No. 1-1A Warroad leave the Red Knights as a bit of a puzzle to be sorted out. Their next five games will all be against ranked teams in Wayzata, Stillwater, Edina, Holy Family, and Proctor/Hermantown.

10. Northfield (3-0)

The Raiders have proven they can win close, winning their first two games by one goal and their third by two tallies.

Two of the Raiders’ wins have come against quality Class A programs in Chisago Lakes and Mound Westonka, and the Raiders polished of Lakeville South 4-2 last Thursday to break through to the top-10.

Sophomore Ayla Puppe has impressed so far with six goals and seven points, including the game-winning goal in overtime against Mound Westonka.

Defender Emma Peschel has two of the three goals scored by No. 9 Benilde-St. Margaret's this season.

Class A

Warroad's Kendra Nordick has been a rock between the pipes for the Warriors to start the season.

1. Warroad (2-1-1)

A 3-2 overtime loss to No. 5-2A Holy Family isn’t enough to knock the Warriors out of the top spot in Class A, especially after they picked up wins over No. 4-1A Proctor/Hermantown and Class AA, Section 7 contender Elk River/Zimmerman. Between those two wins was a 1-1 tie with No. 9-2A Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

Kate Johnson and Lila Lanctot are the leaders in the scoring clubhouse for the Warriors with five points apiece, and goaltender Kendra Nordick has stopped 90 of 95 shots thus far.

2. Orono (3-0)

The Spartans have started hot, recording four goals or more in all three of their opening games.

Wins over Chaska/Chanhassen (7-1), No. 4-1A Proctor/Hermantown (6-3), and Cloquet-Esko-Carlton (4-1) place the Spartans firmly among Class A’s best.

Sacred Heart commit Iyla Ryskamp leads the team with four goals and nine points, followed by Zoe Lopez (2-6-8) and Mia Lopez (4-3-7). Celia Dahl has recorded a goals-against-average of 1.67 and a .942 save percentage through three games.

3. Mound Westonka (4-1)

A team that hovered just out side the preseason Class A rankings, the Whitehawks have made themselves heard through five games, with the only stain on the record a 3-2 overtime loss to No. 10-2A Northfield. Wins over perennial Class State Tournament fixture South St. Paul and 2021 Class AA State Tournament participant Alexandria certainly boost the resume.

Sydney Leonard ranks as one of the state’s leading scorers with seven goals and 13 points for the Whitehawks, and goaltender Ashlyn Roth has filled in admirably for the graduated Callie Nelson. Roth has stopped 110 of 120 shots this season.

4. Proctor/Hermantown (1-2)

The Mirage haven’t scheduled lightly to begin the year, suffering back-to-back losses against No. 1-1A Warroad and No. 2-1A Orono to start the 2021-2022 campaign. The Mirage bounced back with after those two losses with a 4-1 win over South St. Paul.

Nya Sieger and Reese Heitzman are tied with four points each to lead the Mirage. Goaltender Abby Pajari was heroic in the loss to Warroad, making 43 saves on 44 shots in the 1-0 loss.

5. Simley (2-1)

The revolving door of No. 5 in Class A is back, and this time, it’s Simley that fills the void.

The Spartans kicked of the year with a 5-4 win over Chisago Lakes, followed by a 2-0 loss to Holy Angels, and then defeated Dodge County 4-2 for their second win.

Can the Spartans continue climbing the Class A ranks? Only time will tell.

Nya Sieger (4) is one of Proctor/Hermantown's leaders the season with four points in three games.
