That could have gone poorly. 

A scrappy My Edge Hockey squad took advantage of a sleepy Blue Army U16 group and scored first in the 2003 Division championship game, with Cameron MacDonald getting MEH on the board early. Blue Army took three consecutive penalties in the first half, handicapping itself by losing valuable players to the box. 

With 34 seconds remaining in the first half, North Dakota verbal commit Jackson Blake tallied the first goal for Blue Army, breaking the dam and helping the group turn a corner entering the second frame. Forward Luke Delzer scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal in the second half, with goals from Noah Griswold and Adam Marshall cementing the victory. 

Tyler McCarville stopped 17 of 18 shots in the win for Blue Army and rotated evenly with Jack Stark for the duration of the tournament. Stark was selected as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, posting a record of 5-0 and allowing just five goals in 200 minutes of play. 

My Edge Hockey’s Cole Wheaton earned Top Goaltender honors, also winning five games. 

Wednesday’s 2004 Division final may as well have been a showcase for Detroit Honeybaked talent, as players that skate for the iconic black and gold notched three of Draftday Black’s goals in a 5-3 win over previously undefeated East Coast Selects.

Honeybaked products Rutger McGroarty, Hunter Brzustewicz, and Lane Hutson all scored goals, with all three adding assists as well. Also scoring in the win for Draftday Black were George Fegaras and Michael Buchinger. McGroarty also scored the eventual game-winning goal in Draftday Black’s semifinal win over CSKA on Wednesday morning. 

With 10 goals and 19 total points in nine games, McGroarty was named the 2004 Division Most Valuable Player, with Lane Hutson chosen as Top Defenseman. Hutson dished out a tournament-high 15 assists and scored his single goal in the championship game.

East Coast Selects goaltender Charles-Edward Gravel was selected as the tournament’s Top Goaltender with a record of 3-1 and a goals-against average of 1.80. Gravel also posted two shutouts over the course of the tourney.
