Majors, Minors Split For Second Day

While the Major Combine participants tore up the ice at Mariccui, the Minor group migrated to the LumberYard Hockey and Sports Center in Stillwater for a battery of off-ice and on-ice activities.

NHL All-Star and former University of Minnesota star Thomas Vanek addressed the players in the first action of the day in Stillwater, reminding the group that at this age, the game should be fun. Vanek also said that being a good teammate can lead to great things, citing this season's turnaround by the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues.

Prior to taking the ice, the Minors competed in tug-o-war, executed their dryland exercises, and took advantage of the LumberYard's bounty of equipment. The off-ice portion of the Combine included shooting velocity tests, box jumps, pull-ups, and stick-handling. For a little extra inspiration, the two previous year's best scores in each category were posted throughout the training facility.

As morning melted into afternoon, the teams split into their respective three-on-three groups, primed for three games each for the remainder of the day. White 2 emerged as the three-win champions of the three-on-three competition, defeating Maroon 1 in the finals. White 2's Bryce Wiitala tied for the Minor Combine lead in three-on-three scoring with 10 goals, knotted with White 1's Ryan McPartland. Each win, no matter where it came in the bracket, counted toward each group's chance at competing in the overall championship games at Mariucci Arena on Friday.

In Major action, Major Grey notched a 4-1 win over Major Gold after scoring four times in the second half. Jacob Mattson, Noah Urness, Michael Risteau, and Javon Moore all chipped in a goal apiece for Major Grey. Leo Kompelien scored the lone goal of the loss for Major Gold. Erik Charchenko dished out two assists for Major Grey.

Jack Christ recorded a hat-trick to power Major Maroon to a 7-1 win over Major White, compounding a three-goal first half with a four-goal second in the decisive victory. Slippery and sure-handed forward John Halverson played distribution-master for the day, handing out three assists for Major Maroon. In addition to Christ's hatty, Parker Gast scored twice for Major Maroon, with Jordan Geike and Tanner Bruender adding single goals. For Major White, Grant Haug recorded the lone tally.
