Three-Way Tie For First After Saturday

Duluth’s famed Duncan Brewer Sawmill has nothing on the Bantam Elite League when it comes to logjams. 

Three teams are stacked atop the league after Saturday’s slate in the Port City, with the Sharks, North Stars, and Team Wisconsin all knotted at 22 points in the standings. 

The North Stars, the first-place incumbent entering Saturday, rebounded after a 2-1 loss to the Sharks with a gritty 5-3 win over the scrappy Bruins. The loss to the Sharks snapped a seven-game winning streak for the North Stars. The Sharks finished the day 1-1 after losing to Team Wisconsin in the final game of the day by a 4-1 score. 

Team Wisconsin won both of its Saturday game, thumping the Penguins 9-4 before the aforementioned 4-1 win over the Sharks. Topping the Sharks marks the third straight victory for Team Wisconsin. Team North Dakota joined Team Wisconsin in the two-win column with a 4-3 win over the Bruins and a 3-2 win over the Bolts in a shootout. Defenseman Nolan Nenow scored the game-winning goal for Team North Dakota in the extra session, with Zach Nehring also scoring during the shootout.   

In addition to the North Stars and the Sharks, the Bolts also split their games on Saturday, beating the Rangers 6-3 before falling in a shootout to Team North Dakota. The Penguins lost their only game of the day to drop their record to 5-4-1 for the BEL season. Both the Rangers and the Bruins were winless, going 0-2.

Three Stars Of The Day

Tory Lund, North Stars

The thoroughbred forward powered the North Stars to a 5-3 win over the Bruins, helping the team bounce back from a loss earlier in the day to the Sharks. The Sartell-St. Stephen product now has four goals and nine points in 11 games for the North Stars.

Mario Savino, Team Wisconsin 

The Hudson active popped in a pair of goals during Team Wisconsin’s late-night win over the Sharks. The victory cemented secured a share of the BEL regular-season title for Team Wisconsin, a stark contrast to the program that went 1-11 during last year’s regular season. 

Nolan Nenow, Team North Dakota 

Nenow scored the game-winning goal in Saturday afternoon’s shootout win over the Kings, giving Team North Dakota its second win of the day. Nenow expected a brilliant move reminiscent of former Detroit Red Wing star Pavel Datsyuk for his winning tally.
