North Stars/Wisconsin Finish Atop Standings

With one final regular-season game to go on Tuesday night, the top of the Bantam Elite League is already written in stone, but since we’re in Duluth, it should probably be written in copper or nickel.

The North Stars and Team Wisconsin each finished at the top of the standings (stay tuned for a tiebreaker), but reached their first-place destinations in vastly different ways on Sunday.

The North Stars breezed past the Rangers 6-0 to close out the day, with Kade Kohanski leading the charge with a goal and an assist, with Aidan Spenningsby adding a pair of goals. Rangers goaltender Cole Kloek stood tall with 46 saves in the loss. The North Stars finished the BEL regular-season slate with eight wins in their last nine games, quite a turnaround from the first two games of the season. Both Team Wisconsin and the Penguins picked up wins over the North Stars during the league’s opening weekend, squads that the North Stars have subsequently defeated down the stretch.

Team Wisconsin edged the Bruins 3-2 in a shootout to cap a remarkable turnaround from last year’s regular season, in which the boys in the red sweaters went 1-11 and were outscored 79-27. This year’s team finishes with a record of 7-3-2, with the last numeral indicating shootout wins. Kade Smigaj and Zach Howard each scored once in the win over the Bruins, while Evan Hunter scored the game-winning goal in the shootout.

Team North Dakota pulled away for a 6-3 win over the Sharks in the second game of Sunday, paced by Landon Carter two goals and assist and Zach Nehring goal and two assists. Andrew Peterson showed well in the nets for Team North Dakota with 35 saves on 38 shots, helping the group win its third straight game to end the weekend 3-1.

A sleepy Kings team was taken advantage of by the Penguins early Sunday morning, mustering just one goal and surrendering nearly 10 in a 9-1 loss. Despite the margin of victory, Robert Clarkowski stopped 21 of 22 shots between the pipes for the Penguins, who got the bulk of their offense from Cooper Conway’s goal and two assists.

John Schmidt scored two goals in the Penguins' dominant win over the Kings on Sunday morning.
