SSM's Kunz Leads Win With Five Points

Despite a sluggish start to Wednesday night's contest, Shattuck-St. Mary's shook off the rust of four days without a game and eased to a 10-2 win over TDS Transportation in Faribault in Upper Midwest High School Elite League action.

The early minutes of the game favored TDS, as the Sabres continuously had passes bounces off sticks, skates, and every piece of equipment in between. Luke Buss opened the scoring for the Sabres with a goal midway through the first period, a 1-0 lead extended through subsequent goals from Michael Quinn and Artem Shlaine. Quinn's goal with 8:07 to play in the opening period was the first of the season for the St. Louis native.

Shattuck-St. Mary's netted its fourth goal 14 seconds in the second period, and the rout was on, as Jackson Kunz and Scott Morrow each scored following Lucas Coon's opening tally to stretch the lead to 6-0 after two periods.

Undaunted by the deficit, TDS (5-7-2) got on the board within the first minute of the third period, with Owen Neuharth scoring his seventh goal of the Elite League season. TDS's (slight) momentum wave crashed less than a minute later after Kunz's second goal for the Sabres, followed by another TDS tally from former SSM and current Benilde-St. Margaret's standout Blake Mesenburg.

With the score 7-2 in the final half of the period, Quinn and Buss notched their second goals of the tilt for the Sabres, while Kunz polished off the hat-trick with 33 seconds left for the 10-2 final. Kunz also added two assists in the win, and his five-point total gives him seven goals an 10 total points.

The game marks the eighth straight victory for the Sabres (9-1), who last suffered a defeat at the hands of Corner Home Medical on Sept. 21 in New Hope.

TDS Transportation's Blake Mesenburg scored one of his team's two goals in Wednesday's loss to Shattuck-St. Mary's.
