Freshman phenom's hat trick propels Hornets to Saturday semifinals

Edina snuck past Wayzata Thursday night 5-4 in overtime. Freshman Jimmy Clark capped off a dream-like game with his third goal of the game to lift the Hornets to the section semifinals.

When he skated out on the ice early Thursday to the sight of a nearly full Braemar Arena said he was "in awe" of the size of the crowd. In November, Clark was suiting up for the Edina Bantam team hopeful of playing for Curt Giles' varsity team. On Thursday, Clark took center stage and willed this offensively challenged team to the next round of playoffs.

"In Bantams, I had been use to playing a big role. I know that age has little to with how well you can play," Clark told YHH after the game.

After after only averaging 2.84 goals per game this year, the Hornets got off to a fast start Thursday. Clark scored one and assisted another to lead the Hornets to a 2-0 lead after the first period. Wayzata would respond in the second, winning puck battles and puck possession that led to three goals and 3-3 tie after two periods.

Edina took Wayzata's best and found a way to advance to Section Saturday

Wayzata delivered the first body blow in the exciting third period. Jake Schneider gave the Trojans a lead that would only last a few minutes - until Clark scored his second of the night to tie the game with seven minutes left in the game. The final half of the third period featured several exciting exchanges that fans of the Lake Conference have gotten use to over the years. Back and forth hockey with skilled players showcasing their talents.

Halfway through overtime, the dangerous underclassman got the puck in the high slot and fired a rocket past Trojan goalie Garret Bonello's glove side. "I knew we could beat him high if given the chance, I just saw the net move and I knew it was over."

In a moment, Clark went from a ninth grader with potential to a key fixture for Edina Thursday. After his goal, he celebrated on the glass inches away from his Bantam teammates cheering him on. "It was crazy, they were right there after I scored. I am not even sure this is really happening."

Awesome.
