The Sue Ring-Jarvi Girls Player of the Year Award is named after one of the pioneering figures in girls and women's hockey in the state's history. The Roseville native organized and played on the first University of Minnesota Women's Hockey Club Team in 1974. Ring-Jarvi, daughter of Jane Ring, another matriarch of the girls' hockey scene in Minnesota, helped form teams in Minneapolis, St Paul, Minnetonka, Hopkins, Burnsville, Mounds View, Bloomington, and Roseville.

With so many great players to choose from narrowing it to eight players was very difficult. With the addition of a Girls High School Player of the Year award, these nominations are reserved for only youth girls.

Type of Player: One of the best defenders at the 12A level we saw all year. Heavy on the puck and the type of player who is hard stop on the full-ice rush.

Player: Whitney Horton
Team: Edina Green 
Position: Forward
Type of Player: Hortan's phenomenal hands and speed gives other teams trouble. Makes putting the puck in the net look easy.

Player: Olivia Kortan
Team: Moorhead
Position: Forward
Type of Player: Great bloodlines (cousins Griffin and Tanner Ludtke from Lakeville are Division I commits), very productive player who plays a 200-foot game. Kortan is a great skater who has a knack for scoring in tight spaces.

Player: Courtney Little
Team: Andover 
Position: Defense
Type of Player: Powerful skater who takes over the game on both sides of the ice. Smart player that seems like a coach on the ice while directing teammates from the back end. 

Player: Zoe Lopez
Team: Orono-Westonka
Position: Forward/Defense
Type of Player: Versatile player who plays any of the five positions on the ice. Great hands and a goal-scorer who protects the puck at an exceptional level.

Player: Ruby Ryan
Team: Osseo-Maple Grove
Position: Defense
Type of Player: The Leafbird's run to the (unfortunately canceled) State Tournament started from the blue line. Ryan wins the key battles in the defensive zone and holds the zone as well as anyone her age.

Player: Carly Humphrey
Team: Elk River 
Position: Defense
Type of Player: Carly is the type of player that gives her maximum effort on every shift. Hard shot and a physical player made the Elks a tough team to play against all season. 

Player: Taylor Porthan
Team: Edina Green
Position: Defense
Type of Player: One of the smartest and craftiest players we've seen all year at any level. Pure skill with the puck and great vision make the speedy Porthan an impressive player.
