2020 YHH Girl Goalie of the Year - Uma Corniea
The term “video game numbers” is often overused and just as often misappropriated, typically tossed into a story or article when there is no realistic explanation of a set of statistics.
But, honestly, there’s no other way to describe Edina goaltender Uma Corniea’s 2019-2020 season for the Hornets.
Still a freshman, the Princeton verbal commit went 24-2 for the Hornets with both losses coming against Class AA state champion Andover, once in the season-opener and again in the state title game. Across the two contests, Corniea stopped 48 of 53 shots against the state’s most potent offensive unit.
Beyond her record, Corniea collected a goals-against-average of 0.77, a sparkling save percentage of .964, and 11 shutouts through both the regular season and state and section playoffs. With her regular season numbers of 20 wins, 0.62 GAA, and a .970 save percentage, Corniea captured high school hockey’s goaltending version of the Triple Crown, leading the state (tied for the lead in wins) in all three primary goaltending categories after the conclusion of the regular season.
Corniea put that resume together while playing one of the state’s toughest schedules, facing Lake Conference rival powers like Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, and Wayzata twice during the regular season and the Trojans again in the Section 6AA finals.
Astoundingly, Corniea allowed more than one goal in a game just three times in 26 contests, surrendering two goals twice and four scores in the state final against Andover.
Uma Corniea, who guided Edina to the a Class AA runner-up finish in 2020, is verbally committed to Princeton.
