Traveling to Edmonton each summer to take in The Brick Invitational is a rite of passage for the YHH staff that was taken away this past July. The Brick is a great way for us to see who some of the best Squirt-aged hockey players will be from the state (and beyond) next season.

On Thursday night, we got a chance to see 30+ of some of next year's star Squirts, all on the same sheet of ice battling it out at Breck Ice Arena.

Team Minnesota hosted the Warriors Thursday in an exhibition style game with three, 15 minute periods and an ice cut after the second.  Team MN was made up of many players that would have gone to Edmonton this summer had it not been canceled. MN also had a few fill-in players to complete their roster. The Warriors led by Matt and Mark Cullen on the bench are in the Twin Cities for the Easton Cup set to start Friday.

Matt's son Joey scored two goals and was a spark plug on both ends of the rink for the visiting Warriors in the first.  After a scoreless second, Team MN got on the board when Beckett Ertel's shot beat standout Warrior goalie Drew Otten. A minute and change later, Minnesota's top line of Braden Bois, Dean Stevens and Dylan Sherban created an opportunity and Stevens flushed it home to tie the score early on in the third period.

After a see-saw battle in the third, Warroad power forward Rodrick Jackson got loose and beat the Team MN goalie short-side high to give the Warriors the lead back for good.

Players to Watch

With a bevy of talent on both sides of the ice, it's hard to pick just a few players that stood out Thursday. Here are a few super heroes we saw that stood out.

Braden Bois, Team MN (Flash) - Good size and balance, but the first thing you notice - of course you need to watch closely - is his speed.

Joey Cullen, Warriors (Captain America) - having lived in several US cities, Joey has seen his share of the country. Which also means he's picked up a great deal of skill at each stop. We are happy to have him in Minnesota.

Dylan Knox, Team MN (Batman) - a special talent who is the most confident kid on the ice. Much like the caped crusader, Dylan always seems to get his crew out of trouble at the last minute.

Drew Kortan, Warriors (Superman) - whenever the Warriors got into trouble Kortan always seemed to appear out of nowhere and save the day.
