The Chaska/Chanhassen Stormhawks hoist the Blue Ox as this year's tournament champions.
2020 Battle for the Blue Ox champions, Chaska/Chanhassen
Sometimes, a game-winning goal scored on a rebound or loose puck is juiced with more excitement than a stunning breakaway tally or a jaw-dropping move.
Gritty goals, the greasy goals, honor hockey's demand for hard work, and relentless play.
Chaska/Chanhassen's Tanner Bruender honored the game on Sunday afternoon, slamming home a loose puck with 28 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Stormhawks to a 2-1 win over Minnetonka in the Battle for the Blue Ox championship game.
With the puck in possession of the Skippers in their own zone, Chaska/Chanhassen forward Ashton Schultz picked a Minnetonka defender's pocket, scooted to the net, and had his backhand attempt stuffed by Minnetonka's Grady Rannow. With the puck uncovered, Bruender swooped into the slot and jammed it into the net.
Schultz tied the game for the Stormhawks with 6:28 to play in the third period, erasing the 1-0 deficit created by Minnetonka's Hagen Burrows. Burrows's goal was assisted by Luke Garry and Derek Stewart, giving Stewart 19 total points for the weekend. That total ties the previous scoring record, held by Hermantown's Zam Plante.
For his efforts, Stewart was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
