Tony and Peter chat with Minnesota Ice Arena Managers Association President Mathew Hennen of Alexandria to discuss his path to the maintenance side of the rink business, new ideas for COVID-19 protocols, the month-long pause, and where we go from here.

MIAMA President offers expertise, guidance on how to proceed after pause

As the Minnesota hockey community enters its first segment of a four-week pause, teams, players, coaches, and parents have probably run the gamut of emotions.

It’s a confusing and frustrating time for all involved, from the players who have yet another chunk of their hockey lives put on hold to the tournament organizers who are crunching numbers and hoping they can survive another gap in the schedule.

This week’s Pizza Pod, sponsored by LotzzaMottza, focuses on the perspective and expertise of Mat Hennen, the President of the Minnesota Ice Arena Managers Association. As the Assistant Manager of the Runestone Community Center in Alexandria, Hennen is a self-described rink rat, one of those bone-deep hockey people who know every inch of his facility better than he knows his home.

For nearly an hour, Hennen sheds light on how arena managers have dealt with the COVID-19 regulations over the last several months, the everyday issues that plague virtually every arena in the state, and offers his ideas on avoiding another pause this season.
