Invitations were received today by some of the top 2004 and 2005-born Minnesotan players, with a few conspicuous omissions as well.

St. Cloud's NHC to host this year's U18 select camp

USA Hockey has released its invite list for this summer's U18 Select National Player Development Camp, and considering Minnesota represents itself as a region, the camp list is heavily populated with players from Minnesota programs.

Benilde-St. Margaret's and Chisago Lakes are the only programs with multiple 2004-born players selected to participate in the U18 camp. The Red Knights are sending defender, and Ohio State commit Emma Peschel and uncommitted forward Mary Zavoral. Representing the Wildcats are Minnesota Duluth commit Dani Brunette and future Minnesota State Maverick Dani Burgen. Brunette and Burgen, both forwards, helped lead Chisago Lakes to its first appearance in the Class A State Tournament since 2012 last spring.

Among the 2005 age group, Breck stands as the only program to send multiple players to the U18 camp in forward and Minnesota commit Ava Lindsay and defender Josie Lang. Lindsay led the Mustangs with 15 goals and 35 points last season. Lang finished second among Breck defenders with six goals and 14 points.

In addition to Minnesota, Massachusetts, Michigan, and New York operate as their own regions regarding the selection process. The other regions consist of Atlantic, Central, Mid-American, New England, Northern Plains, Pacific, Rocky Mountain, and Southeast.

Players invited to the U18 camp will compete at the National Hockey Center on the campus of St. Cloud State University from July 16-22.

Players invited to the 16/17 National Player Development Camp will compete for the remaining spots at the U18 camp. The 16/17 camp will run from June 26-July 2, and will also be hosted by SCSU's National Hockey Center.

Across the 2004 and 2005-age groups, Shattuck-St. Mary's (Molly Grundhoffer, Sydney Putrah, Genevieve Klein) and Gentry Academy (Cara Sajevic, Riley Reeves, Alexa Hanrahan) pace the field with three players each named to the 16/17 camp.

While every tryout and selection process is different, and the camp picks are based on the subjective opinions of the evaluators, there are several Minnesotan players that seem to be curious omissions from this year's U18 and 16/17 camps.

Players committed to Division I programs that were not selected include, but are not limited to, Holy Family Catholic's Maddie Kaiser, Edina's Uma Corniea, Lakeville South's Claire Enright. Corniea is committed to Princeton, Enright is committed to Minnesota, and Kaiser is also headed to the Golden Gophers.

Blake standouts Sam Broz and Rilee Winters join Enright as three players who made the U18 camp in 2019, but were selected for neither event in 2021. Broz was one of just three players slated for the 2023 grad year invited in 2019. The other 2023's were Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U16 skater and Wisconsin commit Laney Potter and Chicago Mission 19U's Kelly Gorbatenko.

Division I-bound players in North Wright County's Chloe Finnerty, South St. Paul's Lilie Ramirez, and River Lakes' Kianna Roeske were not selected for this year's camp.

Also missing are Lakeville South's Ryann Wright and Luverne's Kamryn Van Batavia, who tied with 16/17 camp invitee Stella Retrum and U18 camp invitee Lindzi Avar for the overall scoring lead during the High Performance Final 54's earlier in the selection process.

Lakeville South's Ryann Wright registered four points in three games during the HP Final 54's Festival.
