CHAMPIONS CUP ADDED TO YHH'S ROSTER OF EVENTS

Hill-Murray Head Coach Bill Lechner and his Pioneers will square off with Eden Prairie in the opening game of the Champions Cup.

With the 2021-2022 high school hockey season on the horizon, Youth Hockey Hub is proud to announce its lineup of high school events for the upcoming year.

The Opener returns after a year’s hiatus and will be played during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The event will feature a handful of the state’s top programs, including Bloomington Jefferson, Chaska, Cretin-Derham Hall, Duluth East, Eastview, and St. Thomas Academy. As in years past, The Opener will be held at historic Bloomington Ice Garden.

Like The Opener, the Hockey For Life Classic returns for another season, played just after Christmas in Prior Lake. The tournament follows a round-robin format and will feature 12 games played from Dec. 28-30. Private schools St. Thomas Academy and Totino-Grace will battle with public school powerhouses Eden Prairie, Edina, Moorhead, Lakeville North, Prior Lake, and Chaska at the Dakotah! Ice Center.

This year, new to the family of YHH events is the Champions Cup, a set of games to be played at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center. The Champions Cup will feature a Ryder Cup-style scoring system, with each period counting toward an overall score.

Teams that “win” a period will receive one point, regardless of the game’s actual score. If the period ends in a “tie,” both teams receive half a point. Junior varsity games will also count toward a team’s overall score.

Outside of the scoring system, the Champions Cup will feature a public vs. private format. The event’s first contest will pit the 2021 Class AA state champion, Eden Prairie, against 2020 champion Hill-Murray. Rounding out the field are Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Hermantown.
