Minnesota State sweeps Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State hands Wisconsin pair of losses in impressive performance on the road.

Mavericks sweep Bulldogs, Tracy named CCHA Rookie of the Week

The Minnesota STate faithful - including the Mankato Peewee B team - had much to cheer about this weekend.

We will start this week's roundup with the in-state matchup between the University of Minnesota Duluth (2-0) at Minnesota State (1-2), our second consecutive top-5 matchup with the Bulldogs ranked fourth and the Mavericks fifth in last week's USCHO poll.

In front of an almost sold-out crowd Friday night, junior David Silye got things started for the Mavericks, scoring on the team's first power play almost halfway through the first. From there, the Mavericks never looked back, adding two more goals from Josh Groll and Jake Livingstone to go into the first intermission up 3-0.

The Bulldogs took another penalty early in the second to put Mankato on a 5-on-3 man advantage, with Cade Borchardt scoring only five seconds later to put the Mavericks up 4-0. With thirty seconds remaining in the second, Will Hillman slotted home another goal with assists to Mason Wheeler and Akito Hirose, marking Hirose's third assist on the night. In the third, senior forward Sam Morton scored his first goal of the season and the lone goal of the period, resulting in a 6-0 Mavericks win. The Mavericks were deadly on the power play in this game, scoring on four of five opportunities. Goaltender Alex Tracy recorded his first shutout of the season, saving all sixteen shots he faced.

Saturday night saw the Mavericks pick up where they left off the night before, with alternate captain Sam Morton putting the team up 1-0 less than eight minutes into the first. That score held until the midway point of the second when Minnetonka native Luke Loheit was believed to have tied things up at one, but no goal was awarded due to a high stick. To make matters worse for the Bulldogs, the Mavericks went on the power play soon thereafter, making it 2-0 through Sam Morton's second goal of the night and fourth point in the series.

Early in the third, Luke Loheit scored, and this one counted, making it 2-1 on the power play. However, that ended up being the final score, with the Mavericks earning the sweep at home.

Finishing with a .969 save percentage on the weekend, goaltender Alex Tracy earned the CCHA's Rookie of the Week award for his two-game performance.

St. Cloud State sweeps Badgers in Madison

St. Cloud State (2-0) traveled to Madison to face off against the University of Wisconsin (0-2) for a two-game series at the Kohl Center.

After a scoreless first period, fifth-year player and Wisconsin native Grant Cruikshank started things off for the Huskies with an assist from Micah Miller. Next, freshman Grant Ahcan tallied a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0, with defenseman Cooper Wylie making it 3-0 only a minute later, scoring his first collegiate goal and point. With seven minutes to go in the game, the Badgers pulled one back through a Mathieu De St. Phalle goal, but the comeback did not last long, with Spencer Meier tallying a power play goal soon after to make it 4-1. The Huskies' points leader, Dylan Anhorn, scored on an odd-man rush with three and a half minutes remaining to bring it to 5-1, which ended up being the final score. Senior goaltender Jaxon Castor saved 24 of 25 shots, recording his second win of the season.

Saturday night saw a change in goal for both teams but started similar to the night before, with neither team scoring in the first before Grant Cruikshank continued his hot start, scoring early in the second. Off assists from Veeti Miettinen and Kyler Kupka, Cruikshank's goal marked his third point in the series in his first time playing at the Kohl Center.

Going into the second intermission still at 1-0, defenseman Corson Ceulemans tied the game at 1-1 off a beautiful top-corner snipe. On the power play with six minutes remaining, Kyler Kupka regained the lead for the Huskies on a tipped shot in close.

That 2-1 score held to earn the Huskies the away sweep and keep them undefeated. St. Cloud State will return home to square off against Minnesota State this coming weekend

Former Waterloo Blackhawks standout and Stillwater native Cooper Wylie netted his first collegiate goal in the Huskies' win over the Badgers on Friday night.

The University of St. Thomas (1-3) welcomed the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 Team (8-0) at their home rink for an exhibition game on Friday night.

Defenseman Aram Minnetian scored first for the U18 team, rifling one home from the top of the circle off a pass from Mounds View native Oliver Moore. With six minutes remaining in the first, Gabe Perreault scored on a rebound to put the U18 team up 2-0 going into the break.

In the second, Ryan Leonard scored his tenth goal of the season to make it 3-0 before the Tommies answered, with Roseville native Ryan O'Neill forcing a turnover and scoring on the backhand. Two minutes into the third period, the Tommies clawed another one back, with freshman Tim Piechowski making it a one-goal game.

However, the U18 team answered soon after on the power play, with Oliver Moore scoring on a one-timer from Will Smith. Alex Weiermair added an empty net goal to finish with a 5-2 win for the U18 team.

Goaltender Trey Augustine recorded 39 saves on the night for the U18 team, posting a .951 save percentage.
