THE YHH STAFF'S TAKE ON THE TOP-10 AT EACH LEVEL.

Class AA

Minnetonka's Grace Sadura led the Skippers in scoring during the regular season with 35 points.

1. Hill-Murray (21-2-1)

With one game remaining on its schedule, calling Hill-Murray the state’s top team for the season feels slightly premature, but not enough for me not to do it.

The Pioneers rolled to wins over previous No. 5A Holy Angels, Metro East Conference rival Hastings, and No. 7AA Maple Grove last week. The Pioneers allowed just one goal across the three games, with Grace Zhan picking up her seventh and eighth shutouts of the season.

This team is a wagon heading into the Section 4AA playoffs, where top-10 teams Gentry Academy and Stillwater present tough competition.

2. Minnetonka (22-2)

Three straight shutouts concluded the 2022-2023 season for the Skippers, with wins over North Wright County, Blaine, and Wazyata coming by a combined score of 15-0.

Oddly enough, with all their games counted, the Skippers conclude the regular season with zero players ranked in the top-20 in scoring, and only one among the top-25 in Class AA in Grace Sadura with 35 total points.

3. Andover (22-3)

Putting a top-10 team into running time is certainly one way to end the regular season.

The Huskies put a cherry on top of the 2022-2023 campaign with an 8-0 win over Stillwater last Saturday, giving the defending Class AA state champs nine straight wins to end the regular season slate.

While Ella Boerger and Isa Goettl have produced like the top-tier players they are, the Huskies have also gotten nine goals and 21 points from St. Thomas commit Madison Brown over the 10 games since her return from injury in mid-January.

4. Edina (19-4-2)

The Hornets came within a goal of winning 20 games for the 254th straight season, but North Wright County goaltender Jadyn Weiser’s 39 saves on 40 shots forced the Hornets into a 1-1 draw with the Riverhawks in the regular-season finale.

Despite a 1-0 loss to Blake, pushing Edina to the No. 2 seed in the Section 6AA playoffs, goaltender Uma Corniea is firing on all cylinders, as is the Hornet penalty kill. The unit has killed penalties at a remarkable 94.6% success rate entering the postseason.

5. Gentry Academy (21-2)

A 5-1 win over respectable Stillwater was followed by a 26-1 thrashing of Fort Frances (Ont.) across the regular season’s final two contests for the Stars, who find themselves as the No. 2 seed in the Section 4AA playoffs behind Hill-Murray.

While the games against Fort Frances weren’t ideal in terms of postseason preparation, the games proved to be an offensive showcase for Grace Delmonico, as the duo combined for 23 points in the two victories.

6. Maple Grove (17-6-1)

In what turned out to be a war of losing attrition in the bottom five of the rankings last week, Maple Grove had the “best” loss of the bunch, losing to top-ranked Hill-Murray 4-1 last Saturday.

Thanks to Holy Family’s loss to Class A Orono, the Crimson slide into the No. 6 slot for the final set of rankings.

Side note: If the Girls’ Hockey Hub numbers are to be believed, the Crimson wields a RIDICULOUS 61.5% success rate on the power play.

7. Moorhead (17-8)

The Spuds locked up the top seed in Section 8AA with a 3-1 win over Brainerd/Little Falls in the regular-season finale last Saturday, bouncing back from a 7-2 loss to No. 1A Warroad at the Warroad Gardens.

Like Maple Grove moving up after Holy Family’s loss to a lesser opponent on paper in Orono, the loss to the Warriors looks better than the Fire’s loss to the Spartans.

8. Holy Family (18-6-1)

Give the Fire credit for keeping things interesting.

A 2-1 overtime loss to Orono marked the sixth time Holy Family has gone to overtime in a game this season, emerging with an official 1-4-1 record in extra sessions over the course of the regular season.

According to the numbers, the Fire has allowed just as many goals in the third period this season (4) as it has in overtime. Weird.

9. Blake (14-11)

Everybody’s favorite rankings-buster returns after knocking off then-No. 10AA Benilde-St. Margaret’s 6-4, then finishing the regular season with a 9-0 win over Breck and a 3-1 win over Centennial/Spring Lake Park.

The Bears secured the No. 1 seed in Section 6AA after eking out a 3-2 win over Benilde-St. Margaret’s and a 1-0 victory over Edina earlier in the season, and if under-the-radar skaters like Callie Arthur can continue to contribute offensively, the Bears could be a factor come the end of February.

10. Benilde-St. Margaret’s (15-7-2)

The Red Knights survive the drop of Stillwater to hang on to the No. 10 slot, despite losing to Blake.

BSM draws top-ranked Hill-Murray to close out the regular season, and has earned the unenviable task of likely facing Edina in the semifinals of the Section 6AA playoffs.

Freshman goaltender Janie McGawn has Blake primed for a deep postseason run as the No. 1 seed in Section 6AA.

Class A

Zoe Lopez scored in overtime to lift No. 3A Orono to a win over then-No. 6AA Holy Family last week.

1. Warroad (21-3-1)

Roseau and Moorhead represented the latest speed bumps on Warroad’s journey, and the Warriors topped the Rams and Spuds by a combined score of 16-4.

The Warriors conclude the regular season with the three highest-scoring players in the state in Rylee Bartz, Talya Hendrickson, and Kate Johnson, who totaled 247 points in 25 games.

2. Proctor/Hermantown (17-6-2)

After edging the (apparently) good Superior Spartans 2-1, the Mirage took to the road for a 5-1 win over Class A State Tournament hopeful Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian.

With the regular season now behind it, the Mirage looks ahead to the postseason as the No. 1 seed in Section 7A, with eyes set on making its third consecutive Class A state title game.

3. Orono (17-3-4)

Were it not for Proctor/Hermantown’s win over then-No. 1AA Gentry Academy, Orono would find itself as the second-ranked team in Class A after topping previous No. 6AA Holy Family in overtime last week.

After losing scoring stud Iyla Ryskamp to graduation, sophomore forward Zoe Lopez has stepped up and carried the load, netting the game-winner in overtime against the Fire and totaling 31 goals on the season.

4. Simley (20-4-1)

Sorry, Simley, beating up on Bloomington Jefferson does not outweigh Orono beating a top-10 Class AA squad.

Armed with 20 wins and the (tied for) state’s leader in assists with 52 Mackaylan McGown, the Spartans appear primed for a run at the Section 4A title as the top seed.

5. South St. Paul (19-5-1)

Best Section in the state? Section 4A makes a case with two top-five Class A teams appearing in the aforementioned Spartans and perennial power Packers.

A 4-1 loss to Simley on Jan. 27 slots the Packers in as the No. 2 seed in the secretion, and South St. Paul rebounded after the Simley loss with an 8-1 pounding of Minneapolis to end the regular season.

Mackaylan McGown (left) finished the regular season tied for the state's lead in assists with 52.

Commentary

Only a few teams with L's this week as teams wind down district play. West Fargo, despite not being in MN, wins the Fargo tourney over some good competition last weekend. The Stampede are a great team with some really good talent.

Blaine and Stillwater skate to a 1-1 tie. This tells us that the difference between teams in the top-10 is razor thin.

Fargo wins the Moorhead tourney over Bismarck, the two NoDak teams edge out the other six MN teams including Grand Rapids.

Thief River Falls enters the top ten with a 24-3-1 record. They could be a wild-card team come Regions.

The Wings beat our previous No. 5 Minnetonka Blue in the championship of the WBL tournament. Anoka-Rogers White is back in the rankings this week, they are on a seven-game win streak.

The U10B rankings as a whole this week didn’t lose a game. Some teams that were in the rankings last week did, so there were some changes. Armstrong Cooper Red, Shakopee, and Anoka Rogers Black all move up one spot to Nos. 6, 7, and 8, respectively, in the order listed. Hastings moves into the rankings, and the Raiders are on a seven-game winning streak.
