As a city, Rochester predates the Civil War, the lightbulb, and the bulk of modern medicine. Founded in 1854 and incorporated in 1858, the little town on the banks of the Zumbro River's South Fork has since grown into a sprawling metropolis with over 120,000 people.
Almost two centuries later, Rochester is famous for the Mayo Clinic, the Olmsted County Fairgrounds corncob tower, and for playing host to YHH's annual Pumpkin Invitational. Now entering its 11th year of existence and third season offering a single-A event, the YHH staff is honored to make the drive down US-52 for another exciting tourney.
Stillwater's Jax Dorff was named Most Valuable Player of last year's tournament.
The 2024 Big Pumpkin will follow the same 24-team bracket style it has for the last several years.
Eight Peewee AA teams have been ranked 1-8 and granted a bye into the Round of 16. The Round of 16 is played Friday night, and the teams facing the top-seeded squads are the winners of the tournament's preliminary round. After the Round of 16 is completed, the tournament splits into three brackets of eight teams each - Black, Orange, and White.
The Black Bracket is a pure winner's bracket, consisting of teams that have not lost during the tournament. The Orange Bracket features teams that lost in the Round of 16. The White Bracket is made up of teams that lost in the Preliminary Round. Each bracket players its way through to a championship game, third-place game, and consolation game.
All three bracket championships are broadcast by YHH.
This year's Little Pumpkin features two pools of five teams each. Other than the Omaha Jr. Mavericks, the Little Pumpkin consists of teams that already have an AA team playing in the Big Pumpkin.
Pool A and Pool B winners will meet on Sunday in the Little Pumpkin championship, and the teams that finish in second place in each pool will play for third place. Teams that finished third, fourth, or fifth in their pool are finished after pool play concludes.
Woodbury captured last year's Little Pumpkin title with a 7-2 win over Wayzata.
