GHS: Games of the Week (Dec. 12-14)

From Lakeville to Bemidji, here are this week's top GHS matchups.

December 12
Dodge County at Blake - 7:00 PM

One of the best teams in Class A makes the trip from 507 to face the Bears at Blake Ice Arena.

Dodge County is coming off a 2-1 victory over Mound Westonka/SWC. The Wildcats are led at forward by seniors Nora Carstensen (7 goals, 8 assists, 15 points), Hannah Peterson (Hamline commit, 5-1-6) and Mollie Koch (1-8-9), sophomores Taryn Wernecke (4-3-7), Bryn Spreiter (4-2-6) and Maysie Koch (4-6-10), freshman Daisy Harens (3-8-11) give Dodge County good scoring depth. 

On defense, senior Claire Dixon (2-1-3), juniors Alexa Van Straaten (1-7-8) and Kylie Meyer (3-3-6), along with sophomore Sophia Buesking (0-2-2), bring experience, poise, and the ability to contribute at both ends of the ice.

Dodge County's penalty kill stifles opposing power plays at a 96.2% rate.

At goaltender, senior Ida Huber (Long Island commit, .951 save percentage) is one of the state's best at her position.  

The Bears are coming off a 2-1 victory over Bay Area (WI). The Blake School is led up front by juniors Ella Bond (2-4-6), Mak Williams (4-1-5), and Hannah Jones (1-2-3), along with sophomores Callie Arthur (3-5-8) and Leila Dalum (3-2-5) as well as freshman Bryn Heinmiller (2-6-8) spread out the scoring for the Bears. 

Blake's power play is dangerous, finding the back of opposing goals at a 31.6% rate this season.

On defense, talented sophomore Addie Wethington (3-4-7) is the star of a young Blake blueline. Senior Malika Chebalco (0-3-3), juniors Izzy Duncan (0-1-1) and Bella Bisbee (1-0-1) along with 8th graders Kathryn Kyle (0-1-1) and Reese Palmstein round out the rest of the Bears' defense. 

The Bears' penalty kill has been solid, shutting down opposing power plays at a 92% rate.

Junior goaltender Janie McGawn (.951 save percentage) has made every start this season for Blake, and this has the makings of a low-scoring goaltender's duel.  


Alexa Van Straaten, Dodge County

December 12
Rosemount at Lakeville South - 7:00 PM

This is an intriguing South Suburban Conference showdown between the Irish and the Cougars as the Irish make the trip south to Lakeville's Hasse Arena.  

Lakeville South is coming off a hard-fought 3-3 tie to Apple Valley. The Cougars' attack is led by seniors Josie Grossman (4-9-13), Emma Swenson (2-3-5), and Camden Hopper (4-2-6), junior Sophia Kuhns (4-5-9), sophomore Maddie Kidwell (2-1-3) and freshman Claire Barrieau (4-3-7) give Lakeville South decent scoring depth.

At defense, senior Grace Buesgens (0-4-4) and Naveah Rubischko (1-0-1), along with juniors Ellie Mittelstadt (0-2-2) and Shannon Hoolihan as well as skilled sophomore Senna Hofman (4-9-13) are a well-balanced group. 

Lakeville South's penalty kill is stifling, shutting down opposing power plays at a 92.3% rate.

Senior goaltender Avery Miller (.917 save percentage) has made every start this season for Lakeville South.  

Rosemount is coming off a 4-3 victory over Lakeville North. The Irish are led up front by sophomores Annalee Holzer (8-6-14) Talia Vescio (2-5-7), Audrey Boll (3-2-5), and Taylor Krieg (3-6-9), who are starting to catch fire offensively. Senior Aubrey Hansen (2-7-9) has been a guiding force for this young forward group.

At defense, seniors Sophie Stramel (Minnesota State commit, 9-6-15), Zoe Juncker (1-7-8), and Madelyn Sundgren (1-2-3) lead the way on Rosemount's blueline. Junior Anamaria Paradise (0-4-4) and sophomore Madelyn Heusinkveld (0-4-4) provide support at both ends of the ice. 

Rosemount's penalty kill has been a significant source of confidence for the Irish, as they have yet to give up a power play goal this season.

At goaltender, the Irish have rotated between junior Ana Ojala (.916 save percentage) and sophomore Gianna Marchese (.935 save percentage) this season.


Aubrey Finn, Rosemount

December 13
Warroad at Andover - 5:00 PM

'Have bus, will travel' is the mantra as the Warriors go down to the 763 to face the Huskies.  

Warroad is coming off a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Champlin Park/Coon Rapids. The Warriors are led at forward by senior Kaiya Sandy (5-5-10), juniors Taylor Reese (8-6-14) and Sam Earhart (2-5-7), as well as sophomore Jaylie French (5-7-12), giving the Warriors plenty of scoring depth. Freshmen Karlee Kalbrener (2-5-7) and Lindsey Lorenson (1-3-4), as well as 8th-grader Olivia Anthony (3-2-5), are getting better with each game.  

At defense, senior Katy Comstock (Bemidji State commit, 3-7-10) leads an experienced group of juniors in Vivienne Marcowka (1-2-3), Kate Johnson (0-1-1), and Reagan Haley (0-1-1) move the puck well and help keep Warroad on the attack. 

Warroad's penalty kill has been outstanding, holding opposing power plays at bay at a 95.2% rate.

At goaltender, junior Payton Rolli (.941 save percentage) has made every start this season for the Warriors.  

Andover is coming off a tough 3-1 loss to Centennial/Spring Lake Park. Seniors Maya Engler (St. Thomas commit, 5-1-6), Hannah Christenson (Northeastern commit, 1-5-6), and Hanna Olson (St. Lawrence commit, 4-2-6) lead the way for an experienced Huskies' forward group. Still, scoring has been a bit of a struggle this season.    

On defense, seniors Mackenzie Jones (Wisconsin commit, 1-5-6) and Courtney Little (St. Thomas commit, 2-3-5) are one of the best defensive pairings in the state. They will be tasked with shutting down Warroad's dynamic attack. Sophomore Taylor Schreifels (0-2-2), freshmen Molly Clough (0-2-2), and Lena Fenske have steadily improved with each game.  

The Huskies' penalty kill has been solid, denying opposing power plays at a 95.5% rate.

At goaltender, junior Clairebella Hills (.985 save percentage) has carried most of the workload this season for the Huskies, but they have utilized sophomore Jade Karnowski (.903 save percentage) as well. 


Hannah Christenson, Andover

December 14
Benilde-St. Margaret's at Bemidji - 2:00 PM

The Red Knights head north to the 218 to take on the Lumberjacks of Bemidji in this interesting metro area versus outstate tilt.  

Benilde-St. Margaret's is coming off a 7-0 rout of Farmington. The Red Knights forward group is led by seniors Kendall Hassler (Minnesota State commit, 4-3-7) and Brooklyn Riley (3-2-5) along with junior Grace Bendickson (2-2-4) in addition to sophomores Talla Hansen (3-8-11), Katie Zakrajsheck (3-5-8) and Brynn Heising (3-4-7) give Benilde-St. Margaret's plenty of skill and scoring depth. 

On defense, seniors Lulu Rucinski (Maine commit, 5-7-12), Addie Morris (Bemidji State commit), 1-3-4), Ella Pasqua (Quinnipiac commit, 2-4-6) and Bailey Gray (Delaware commit, 2-2-4) give Benilde-St. Margaret's a top four that few teams can match.   

At goaltender, senior Elie Hancock (.950 save percentage) has started the majority of games for the Red Knights, but they have utilized sophomore Emma Matack (.900 save percentage) this season.

Bemidji is coming off a 5-2 victory over Alexandria. The Lumberjacks are led at forward by star sophomore Bailey Rupp (18-12-30), junior Megan Berg (6-9-15) as well as sophomore Emma Greiner (2-7-9) and freshmen Naomi Johnson (7-6-13) and Ava Corrington (2-4-6) give Bemidji solid scoring depth. 

Bemidji's power play is finding the back of the net at a 34.3% rate.

On defense, sophomore Millie Knott (5-14-19) likes to join the attack and is an adept puck mover. Seniors Jadyn Prokop, junior Taylor Bjerke (1-2-3) sophomore Mali McLean (1-6-7), and freshman Jacinda Lossing (0-2-2) round out the rest of Bemidji's defense, who already faced an array of tough challenges this season in games against Roseau, Warroad and Hill-Murray.   

Senior Ava Myhre (.851 save percentage) has made every start this season for the Lumberjacks at goaltender.


Lulu Rucinski, Benilde-St. Margaret's

December 14
Pine City Area at Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian - 3:00 PM

Pine City Area makes their way down to Mound to face the White Hawks in this intriguing Class A matchup.  

Pine City Area is coming off a 7-3 loss to North Shore. The Dragons are led at forward by high-scoring seniors Rhiannon Ashworth (21-9-30), Peyton Perrault (6-11-17), and Jennae Szucs (5-13-18), who carries most of the scoring for Pince City Area. Sophomore Madison Perreault (4-2-6) is emerging as a strong secondary scoring option for the Dragons.

On defense, juniors Alana Linnell (2-4-6) and Camdyn Prokosch (1-1-2), along with sophomores Isabella Schneider (2-3-5), Kendall Brandt (1-1-2) and Taliah Peterson (4-0-4) are a mobile group that likes to get involved in the Dragons' attack.

Junior Iriss Saftner (.878 save percentage) has made every start this season for Pine City Area at goaltender.  

Mound Westonka/SWC is coming off a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Dodge County. The White Hawks are led at forward by seniors Elli Lundquist (4-4-8) and Gisella Harder (2-3-5), as well as junior Breylynn Koehler (1-4-5) and sophomore Hazel Sturgis (1-1-2) lead an offense where scoring is at a premium.

On defense, juniors Ali Butler (2-6-8) and Lizzy Callahan (Minnesota-Duluth commit, 4-2-6), along with sophomore Sky Nienaber (0-1-1) and freshman Marian Omann (1-1-2), are two-way defenders who like to support the play in the offensive zone but are still very responsible in their own end of the ice.

At goaltender, Mound Westonka/SWC has rotated between juniors Emma Covell (.883 save percentage) and Savannah Blohowiak (.963 save percentage) this season.
