Bismarck continues to carry the mantle for the Flickertail State
On the surface, the North Dakota boys' hockey scene runs through Grand Forks, from youth to college. The Grand Forks Aviators youth program is consistently one of the best in the country, and the state boys' state hockey title is routinely decided between Red River and Central high schools.
On the girls' side, the state's most recent power programs lie further south on the Red River in Fargo. Fargo Davies and the North/South co-op have won the last four girls' state championships. But before the state's most populous city took over, the dominant girls' program resided in the North Dakota capital.
The Bismarck Blizzard co-op program is credited with nine state championships since 2003, including a six-year run of consecutive titles from 2015-2020.
This year's Bismarck Capitals 15A program appears poised to continue the proud tradition of girls' hockey in the home of the Garrison Dam.
The Capitals are currently 2-0 in Danglefest play, slipping past Edina White 3-2 on Saturday before thumping Rosemount 6-1 on Sunday. Elliana Mattson is the team's scoring leader, totaling three goals and seven points through two games.
Alivia Rask and Lydia Fylling have three points apiece for the Capitals, who will face Minnesota's (arguably) top 15A team, Chaska/Chanhassen, in the semifinals on Monday afternoon.
Bismarck's Elliana Mattson has seven points in two games for the Capitals.
Kaylee Augdahl introduces herself to Danglefest
This year's tournament has featured a bevy of two-goal games from players. While impressive, two goals don't have a moniker - it's not a hat trick, nor is it a famed "Texas Hatty," which refers to a four-goal performance.
West Fargo's Kaylee Augdahl earned her Lone Star stripes on Sunday, popping four pucks into Forest Lake's net in a 6-3 victory over the Rangers. Augdahl's four goals are tops amongst all 15A skaters.

Chaska/Chanhassen vs. Bismarck
What’s the opposite of tough sledding? Soft sledding? Because that’s been Chaska/Chanhassen’s Danglefest experience so far. The Stormhawks hung 10 on Brainerd/Little Falls in a 10-1 victory, then shut out Mounds View-Irondale 5-0. There is a bevy of scoring options for the Stormhawks, but the current leader is Audrey Nichols, with three goals and nine points.
