1. Edina (12-2)
A perfect 3-0 mark in the Walser Tourney and losses from Centennial/Spring Lake Park and Minnetonka push the Hornets back to the top. After beating Rosemount 3-1, Edina shut out Stillwater 3-0 and the Lake Conference rival Skippers 4-0 while holding the teams to a combined 1-11 on the power play.
2. Centennial/Spring Lake Park (14-1)
The winning streak ended at 14 after the Cougars were shut out by Orono in the Benilde-St. Margaret's Silverback Shootout. Given that the loss to Orono came on the heels of wins over Hill-Murray and BSM, this is not cause for concern.
OR IS IT?
Psych. It's not.
3. Minnetonka (13-2-1)
The Skippers advanced to the Walser Tourney finals after wins over Holy Family and Andover before running into Edina and a subsequent 4-0 loss. The game against the Hornets marked the first time since Nov. 19 that the Skippers have been on the losing end of a contest.
4. Benilde-St. Margaret's (10-2-2)
Like the Skippers, the Red Knights found themselves short on the scoreboard for the first time in over a month last week, losing to previously top-ranked Centennial/Spring Lake Park 4-2. The Red Knights bounced back with a 6-0 win over Hill-Murray to close out their Silverback Shootout.
5. Andover (10-5)
A 2-1 loss to Minnetonka was sandwiched wins over Moorhead (6-3) and Stillwater (3-0) during the Walser Tourney. The loss to the Skippers marks the third time in five games that the Huskies have fallen short by a single goal.
6. Hill-Murray (10-4)
The Pioneers are officially 1-3 in their last four games, losing to Centennial/Spring Lake Park and Benilde-St. Margaret's during the Silverback Shootout. If you're looking for a glaring statistic from which to draw too much of a conclusion, it could be the penalty kill. The PK's current percentage is 68.2.
7. Moorhead (11-4-1)
The Spuds made the most out of the Walser Tourney's consolation bracket, beating top-10 teams Holy Family 3-2 and Maple Grove 3-1 en route to the consolation title. The Spuds are the on-paper favorite in their next four games.
8. Roseau (13-3)
Roseau might be the most exciting team in the state. Ten of the Rams' 16 games have been decided by two goals or fewer this season, and they won three straight one-goal games to win the ultimate prize at Eden Prairie's Mid-Winter Meltdown.
9. Holy Family (11-5)
Holy Family's experience during the Walser Tourney could be described as a play in three acts. The Fire lost big (4-0 against Minnetonka), lost small (3-2 against Moorhead), and then won big (5-2 against Rosemount).
The Fire will face Orono, Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian, and Benilde-St. Margaret's in a four-day span to kick off the season's home stretch.
10. Maple Grove (9-5-2)
Things I am a fan of: fall thunderstorms, my dogs, Diet Coke, and American cheese.
Things I am not a fan of: having my own perceived advantage thrown back in my face.
Maple Grove got a taste of its own medicine in a shootout loss to Stillwater, where the Crimson watched helplessly as Pony goaltender Haley Solnitzky stopped 50 shots. A 3-2 win over Rosemount is a bit close for comfort, and a 3-1 loss to Moorhead may have spoiled New Year's, but Maple Grove is still a battle-tested fortress in Class AA.
1. Orono (9-4-3)
Orono continues its curious season, tying Benilde-St. Margaret’s and losing to Hill-Murray before upsetting Centennial/Spring Lake Park 2-0 in its last game of the Silverback Shootout. Zoe Lopez scored both goals in the win over the Cougars. Beating a previously undefeated No. 1 team pushes the Spartans to the head of the class…for now.
2. Warroad (10-3)
Winning three games is certainly one antidote to losing back-to-back.
The Warriors topped Crookston 6-0, Albert Lea 2-1, and Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian 3-0 after losing to Andover and Moorhead on Dec. 13 and Dec. 21.
Like Edina, Warroad’s penalty kill stole the show last week, going to a perfect 10/10.
3. Dodge County (11-2-1)
Dodge County had a four-game winning streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to Breck during the Crosstown Cup, giving the Wildcats a 1-1 season split with the Mustangs. Road contests against Chicago Lakes and Proctor/Hermantown are on deck for the Wildcats.
4. Breck (11-3)
After missing out on two early chances for signature wins in November, the Mustangs made up for lost time with wins over last week’s No. 2-1A Holy Angels, previously top-ranked Dodge County, on consecutive days.
5. Holy Angels (9-3-3)
The Stars have just one win in their last five games after going unbeaten in nine contests. The road doesn’t get any easier this week with Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Centennial/Spring Lake Park scheduled for Jan. 2 and Jan. 4.
6. Proctor/Hermantown (11-4)
The Mirage did not play over the holiday break. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton is on tap for Thursday this week.
7. Blake (8-5-1)
Going 1-1-1 over the last week doesn’t move the needle for the Bears, who bear Wayzata 4-1, lost to Dodge County 2-0, and tied Holy Angels 1-1 during Crosstown Cup play. The first of two meetings with rival Breck is slated for Jan. 4.
8. Marshall (15-1-1)
The Tigers were another team whose unbeaten streak broke last week, falling to defending North Dakota state champion Fargo North/South 8-3 at the Essential Health Winter Classic (CREATIVE NAME WOAH) in West Fargo.
Fairmont is the lone game on the schedule this week for the Tigers.
9. Albert Lea (10-3-1)
Despite going 1-2, Albert Lea’s trip north to Warroad accomplished precisely what it was supposed to. The Tigers got three competitive games in and faced two teams they could see again at the Class 1A State Tournament if the chips fall in their favor.
10. Crookston (8-4-1)
Thanks to a 3-1 win over Albert Lea, Crookston finds itself in the top 10 this week. Senior goaltender Kambelle Freije stopped 35 of 36 shots in the Pirates’ victory over the Tigers and finished Warroad’s Hockeytown Holiday Classic with 121 saves on 133 total shots.
