GHS: Games of the Week (Jan. 16-18)

From Paynesville to Dodge County, here are your girls HS hockey games of the week.

January 16
Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian at Holy Family - 7:00 PM

The White Hawks make their way to Victoria Recreation Center to take on the Fire. Holy Family prevailed 7-0 over the White Hawks in a game last week, so can the Fire earn the sweep?  

Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian is coming off a 6-1 victory over Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato and has won three of their last four games. The White Hawks are led at forward by seniors Elli Lundquist (11 goals, 18 assists, 29 points) and Gisella Harder (12-11-23), as well as juniors Brelynn Koehler (8-13-21) and Georgia Harmer (3-9-12) along with sophomore Hazel Sturgis (3-4-7) carry most of the scoring up front.  

Juniors Ali Butler (2-14-16) and Lizzy Callahan (Minnesota-Duluth commit, 15-8-23) lead a young defense corps for the White Hawks. Sophomore Sonja Molin (0-1-1), along with freshmen Marian Omann (4-10-14) and Emma Butler (2-1-3), demonstrate that Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian has a bright future on its blueline.  

At goaltender, the White Hawks have rotated between juniors Savannah Blahowiak (1.92 goals against average) and Emma Covell (2.37 goals against average) this season. 

Holy Family is coming off a 4-3 loss to Benilde-St. Margaret's. Holy Family is led up front by senior Josie Linn (New Hampshire commit, 17-12-29), juniors Ella Nonweiler (10-15-25), Chloe King (3-11-14), and Addy Cowan (Dartmouth commit, 9-20-29) and freshman Allie DeFauw (9-7-16) give the Fire capable scoring punch.

On defense, seniors Casey Cronin (2-14-16) and Maielle Schugel (0-2-2), along with juniors Katya Sander (Minnesota commit, 8-14-22) and Lilly DeFauw (3-6-9), are experienced, versatile and capable of contributing at either end of the ice.   

At goaltender, junior Kayla Swartout (1.56 goals against average) has carried most of the goaltending workload for the Fire this season, but they have given opportunities to sophomore Raegan Conrad (two shutouts) as well.  


Addy Cowan, Holy Family

January 16
Minnesota River at River Lakes - 7:15 PM

The Bulldogs travel up to Stearns County to Paynesville Arena to battle the Stars of River Lakes.  

Minnesota River is coming off a 3-1 victory over Windom and is riding a 4-game winning streak. The Bulldogs are led at forward by juniors Macey Portner (12-11-23) and Cristina Cruz (4-6-10), sophomores Noelle Simonette (11-15-26) and McKenna Andresen (14-11-25), as well as freshman Mara Von Bank (9-3-12) carry most of the scoring for Minnesota River.

On defense, juniors Claire Hathaway (4-5-9), Shaylan Dunphy, and Kaylee Gogerty (3-8-11), freshmen Maren Swenson (1-6-7) and Kelcie Weydert (0-3-3) as well as 8th-grader Sophie Tews (1-2-3) play responsibly in Minnesota River's end of the ice which is a big reason why they only give up little more than a goal per game.

Minnesota River's penalty kill doesn't give up much either, killing opposing power plays at a 95.7% rate.

At goaltender, junior Annika Magelee (1.16 goals against average) has started in every game this season for the Bulldogs.  

River Lakes is coming off a 1-0 loss to Sartell/Sauk Rapids. River Lakes is led at forward by seniors Sophia Hess (23-13-36) and Madi Wendlandt (4-2-6), and junior Abby Storms (7-9-16) helps carry the Stars offensively. Sophomore Sophie Olson (1-6-7) and freshman Bria Larson (3-3-6) have gained confidence with each game. 8th-grader Peyton Roeske (7-13-20) has emerged as a key contributor for the Stars this season.

At defense, seniors Dalayne Hattlestad (0-3-3) and Makayla Schrieber-Horn (1-3-4), junior Millie Korneck (0-3-3), along with sophomore Addie Olson (1-4-5) and freshman Tyanna Blaschko (0-1-1) will try to slow down the Bulldogs' offense. 

At goaltender, senior Kaydence Roeske (Minnesota State commit, 2.04 goals against average) has started in every game this season for River Lakes.

January 17
Hill-Murray at Dodge County - 7:00 PM

The Pioneers travel to the 507 to Dodge County Arena to battle the Wildcats in an intriguing matchup of top-ranked Class AA and Class A teams.  

Hill-Murray is coming off a 7-0 rout of Simley. Hill-Murray is led at forward by a talented trio of sophomores Jaycee Chatelain (15-22-37), Emily Pohl (22-19-41), and Elliana Engelhardt (13-18-31) who carry most of the scoring for the Pioneers. Senior Ella Hornung (Hamline commit, 9-3-12) provides experience and leadership in addition to offense. Freshman Gwynn Skoogman (6-13-19) is off to a fast start this season, and 8th-grader Anna Pohl (3-8-11) is showing more promise with each game. 

On defense, seniors Josie Skoogman (3-10-13) and Kasey Senden (4-14-18), along with sophomore Addy McLay (1-5-6) and freshman Olivia Braunshausen (0-9-9), give the Pioneers are mobile, skilled and help the Pioneers transition quickly from defense to offense.

At goaltender, the Pioneers have split starts between junior Charlotte Oscarson (2.20 goals against average) and 8th-grader Piper Tam (2.00 goals against average) this season.  

Dodge County is coming off a 2-0 victory over Moose Lake Area and is riding a 3-game win streak. The Wildcats are led at forward by seniors Nora Carstensen (9-17-26), Hannah Peterson (Hamline commit, 8-1-9) and Mollie Koch (1-11-12), junior Zoe Heimer (5-6-11) along with sophomores Taryn Wernecke (5-5-10), Bryn Spreiter (7-4-11) and Maysie Koch (8-9-17), freshman Daisy Harens (4-11-15) give Dodge County good scoring depth. 

On defense, senior Claire Dixon (3-2-5), juniors Alexa Van Straaten (2-14-16) and Kylie Meyer (6-5-11), along with sophomores Sophia Buesking (0-4-4) and Adyn Spreiter, bring experience, poise and the ability to contribute at both ends of the ice. Freshman Josie Fulton (0-2-2) is showing steady improvement.

Dodge County's penalty kill stifles opposing power plays at a 93.9% rate.

Senior Ida Huber (Long Island commit, .960 save percentage) continues to have a strong season at goaltender. 


Gwynn Skoogman, Hill-Murray

January 18
Moorhead at Orono - 3:00 PM

The Spuds travel down to the 952 to face the Spartans of Orono in this Class AA versus Class A showdown.  

Moorhead is coming off a 3-0 victory over Bemidji and is enjoying the momentum of a 6-game winning streak. The Spuds are led up front by seniors Olivia Kortan (14-18-32), Addie Salvevold (5-9-14), and Addie Moos (8-5-13) as well as junior Haylee Melquist (14-13-27) along with sophomores Anna Bjorkman (9-12-21) and Shay Benson (12-9-21) give Moorhead balanced scoring through its top two lines.

On defense, the Spuds are led by seniors Anika Stromme (2-7-9), Kendall Lund (0-1-1), and Kellsey Kludt (2-12-14), as well as junior Lucey Wilson (3-16-19), are a source of stability that helps gives Moorhead a lot of confidence their end of the ice is taken care of.  

At goaltender, senior Taylor Kressin (1.68 goals against average) has carried most of the workload this season, but they have utilized fellow senior Alison Moszer (two shutouts) as well.

Orono is coming off a 3-1 victory over Holy Angels.  At forward, seniors Zoe Lopez (Minnesota State commit, 21-10-31) and Anna Rausch (St. Norbert commit, 5-10-15). Sophomore Alex Christian (5-12-17) is on the cusp of a breakout season, while freshman Gabi Lopez (10-10-20) continues to exhibit poise and skill beyond her years. Macy Rasmussen (Ohio State commit, 10-9-19) and Maddy Kimbrel (Wisconsin commit, 7-11-18) should be back from participating in the IIHF U18 World Championships as part of the silver medal-winning Team USA in Vantaa, Finland.

On defense, seniors Alex Paulsen (2-11-13), Anika Fortin (0-6-6), Jaid Schultz (0-1-1), and Veronica Anderson (0-3-3) provide experience and poise to the Orono blueline. Sophomores Sydney Anderson and Ryan Regan (0-7-7) are learning steadily with each game. 

At goaltender, the Spartans have leaned on sophomore Vivienne Anderson (1.83 goals against average) for most of the starts this season, but they have utilized senior Maddie Forsyth (one shutout) as well.  


Anna Rausch, Orono

January 18
Edina at Maple Grove - 3:15 PM

The Hornets travel up I-494 to take on the Crimson of Maple Grove at Maple Grove Community Ice Arena.  

Edina is coming off a 1-0 loss to Minnetonka. The Hornets are led at forward by senior Whitney Horton (St. Thomas commit, 12-12-24), juniors Lorelai Nelson (Penn State commit, 11-15-26), Cate McCoy (Dartmouth commit, 11-8-19) and Charlotte Theirl (7-9-16) give the Edina plenty of sting up front. Sophomore Audrey Davis (11-17-28) has emerged as a go-to scoring threat for the Hornets.  

The Hornets' power play has been absolutely on fire, lighting the lamp at a 38.5% rate this season.

On defense, senior Camille Dubuc (Quinnipiac commit, 3-13-16), juniors Brenna Prellwitz (5-4-9) and Taylor Gardner (2-6-8), as well as sophomores Kaylan Kapsen (0-8-8), Libby Moe (2-13-15) and Lilly Horton (0-1-1) help Edina control the pace of play.  

At goaltender, seniors Nora Hannan (St. Thomas commit, 1.10 goals against average) and Reese McConnell (1.00 goals against average) have split starts this season. 

Maple Grove is coming off a 4-0 victory over Alexandria. The Crimson are led at forward by seniors Kelsey Olson (12-18-30) and Abbey Oakland (9-5-14), along with talented sophomores Hadley Bakker (9-10-19), Harper Wieneke (4-7-11) and Cate Fischer (6-11-17) to lead Maple Grove's attack.  

On defense, senior Addie Sillerud (2-4-6) will be leaned on to provide experience to a young group that will also include sophomores Maddie Elfstrand (1-7-8), Maisy Tomlinson (5-11-16), Ava Koshire (1-1-2) and Fiona Gallagher (1-5-6) who have demonstrated steady improvement throughout the season.  

At goaltender, sophomore Bella Prosser (1.47 goals against average) has carried most of the goaltending duties for the Crimson this season, but they have utilized fellow sophomore Bryn Behr (1.50 goals against average) as well.
