Staff's take on top-10 girls teams in Minnesota

Class AA Girls

Emma Matack, Benilde-St. Margaret's

1. Minnetonka (17-2-1)

The Skippers scored five times in the third period to put an exclamation point on a 9-0 win over Wayzata. Freshman Claire Sommerfeld continued her impressive debut high school season with four goals and five points in the win.

2. Benilde-St. Margaret's (15-2-2)

Two wins for the Red Knights last week run the team's current streak to six victories. The Red Knights edged Hill-Murray 3-2 and blanked Proctor/Hermantown 5-0.

3. Edina (16-3)

The Hornets bounced back after last Friday's 1-0 loss to Minnetonka with a 6-4 win over Maple Grove, led by Camille Dubuc's two goals and one assist. Allowing four goals in a single period is a rarity for the Hornets and should be no cause for concern.

4. Centennial/Spring Lake Park (18-2)

Four straight wins for the Cougars after a 5-3 victory over conference rival Champlin Park/Coon Rapids and a 7-1 win over Class A Crookston. A final regular-season record of 23-2 is a likely outcome, and the Cougars have a stranglehold on Section 5AA's top seed.

5. Andover (13-5-1)

A 4-1 win over Grand Rapids/Greenway was closer than the Huskies would have liked, considering the Lightning trailed by just one goal entering the third period. Still, the Huskies have the top seed in Section 7AA, and will be battle-tested after closing out the regular season with games against Elk River, Hill-Murray, Champlin Park/Coon Rapids, Orono, and Moorhead.

6. Hill-Murray (14-6)

The Pioneers lost to No. 2AA Benilde-St. Margaret's last week, but rebounded with a 2-0 road win against previous No. 2A Dodge County. Eighth-grade goaltender Piper Tam finished the Dodge County game with a 39-save shutout.

7. Roseau (18-4)

Three games in five days proved to be no problem for Roseau, as the Rams picked up wins over Crookston, Moorhead, and Brainerd/Little Falls. The victory over the Spuds places the No. 1 seed in Section 8AA on the table, given that the teams have split the season series.

8. Holy Family (14-6)

A three-goal second period powered the Fire to a 4-0 win over Wright County Conference rival Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian last week. According to MN Girls' Hockey Hub, the Fire also held the White Hawks to just eight shots on goal. Were it not for Roseau's win over last week's No. 6AA team Moorhead, the Fire would find itself ahead of the Rams.

9. Moorhead (15-6-1)

The Spuds suffered a pair of body blows last week. On enemy ice, the Spuds fell to Roseau 2-1 in overtime, then watched a third-period comeback attempt fall just short in a 2-1 loss to Orono. The Spuds and Rams appear to be on a collision course for a repeat of last year's Section 8AA finals.

10. Maple Grove (12-6-3)

The Crimson shut out Anoka before losing to Edina on Saturday to go 1-1 on the week. Five of Maple Grove's six losses have come against ranked Class AA opponents, and all five have been by two or fewer goals.

CLASS A GIRLS

Ashley Babbitt, Breck

1. Warroad (17-3)

Warroad made a case to be dubbed the state’s most hydrophobic team last week.

The Warriors outscored Thief River Falls, Brainerd/Little Falls, and River Lakes by a combined score of 21-1. Kaiya Sandy and Jaylie French each recorded seven points across last week’s games.

2. Orono (12-5-3)

The Spartans trounced Minneapolis 10-1, then edged Moorhead 2-1 thanks to a 44-save performance by Viv Anderson. The game marked the third time in four outings that Anderson has made at least 30 saves for the Spartans.

3. Dodge County (14-3-1)

It was a valiant effort by Dodge County last week, where the Wildcats took Hill-Murray to the edge in a 2-0 loss. Eagan, Hastings, and Eastview are on the docket for the Wildcats this week.

4. Holy Angels (13-5-3)

The Stars made quick work of New Prague and Bloomington Jefferson last week, shutting out the Stormhawks 13-0 and blanking the Jaguars 6-0. The Stars now have four wins in their previous five games, and will take on Chaska/Chanhassen again this week.

5. Proctor/Hermantown (15-6)

The Mirage saw a three-game winning streak end last week, allowing three goals in the second period en route to a 5-0 loss at the hands of No. 2AA Benilde-St. Margaret’s. The Mirage will face Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian today (Jan. 20) and then Duluth on Saturday.

6. Breck (12-6)

Breck bumps ahead of Blake this week after edging the Bears 2-1 in overtime, sweet payback after the Bears downed the Mustangs by an identical score on Jan. 4. Ashley Babbitt scored the game-winner in the extra session of the win over Blake.

7. Blake (12-7-1)

Wins over Owatonna and Delano/Rockford bookended the 2-1 overtime loss to Breck last week. The Bears scored 14 total goals in the wins over the Huskies and Tigers, and will face Northfield, Cretin-Derham Hall, and North Wright County this week.

8. Albert Lea (15-3-1)

After scoring 17 times in a win over Red Wing last week, the Tigers’ offense came back to earth in wins over Luverne (1-0) and Rochester Mayo (2-0). Goaltender Jayda Moyer stopped all 43 shots she faced last week.

9. Mound Westonka/Southwest Christian (12-9)

The White Hawks benefit from Marshall’s loss to unranked Pine City Area and slither up to No. 9 this week, despite losing twice in four games last week.

10. Marshall (18-2-1)

From a preparedness standpoint, it’s probably a good thing the Tigers lost at least one more time during the regular season. Losses expose flaws, and sometimes flaws can only be fixed after they reveal themselves. New Ulm and South Central are up next for the Tigers.
